Most of the holiday I was on edge, but I did manage to enjoy myself. I didn't hold back with Jen, but I did wonder after I had touched her, after I had kissed her, who was watching.
We were due to go home tomorrow, and she had gotten pretty good at skiing. She didn't need the lessons anymore and was taking on the slopes with me. She still fell which I always found hilarious, and we had managed to have romantic meals, and evenings together under the snowy skies. I was thankful that nothing else had gone wrong.
Until this day. We were skiing just after breakfast and racing each other down the slopes. Jen was ahead of me just a little bit, I was allowing her to win the race as I secretly liked watching her. That's when it happened as if in slow motion.
She tripped, I don't know how it happened, maybe there was a rock, maybe there was nothing, but suddenly she was tumbling, it wasn't like when she fell before, this was like her body was just broken somehow, her legs went over her head and she began to roll down the hill. All I could hear was the wind and her screams stabbing at me.
I flew down the slopes after her as quickly as was humanly possible, probably putting myself in danger at the same time but I didn't care.
She was in a ball in the snow when I reached her, snow was covering her hair, her body and she was moaning in pain.
'Jen, JEN' I screamed as I reached her.
She could only moan at me in response.
'Where does it hurt baby?' I was on the floor next to her, afraid if I touched her she would be in more pain.
'My arm' she cried in a low moan. Thank god, she hadn't injured her back.
'Are you sure there's nowhere else? Can you sit up?' I asked her, helping to manoeuvre her up into a sitting position. Luckily one of the Ski patrol guys had spotted us and was making his way over to us at the same moment I was about to shout for help.
'Don't worry it'll be ok' I reassured her as I put my arm around her.
'I can't move my arm' she squeaked at me. Her eyes showed all kinds of fear I had never seen before.
'It'll be ok.' I repeated.
'Took a tumble there' the ski patrol said as he approached us. 'Are you hurt?' he asked bending to examine her.
'My arm' she mumbled, 'I can't move it.'
'It might be sprained, might be broken. Don't move it too much my love, come on, help her get them ski's off' he instructed me and we both helped her to her feet, loading his car with the ski's and ourselves. I protectively took her in my arms in the car, she was wet and hurt and I was scared. The snow patrol took us to the nearest medical point where I had to wait outside as she was escorted in.
Not even 20 minutes later a nurse came out and told me she had broken her arm in two places and they were currently putting it into a cast. It looked like she had a mild concussion but besides a few bruises she was going to be ok.
'We go home tomorrow' I told the nurse still in shock. 'Will she be ok to fly?' I had been thinking about this since we arrived at the medical point.
'She will be fine to fly, don't look so worried' said the nurse kindly.
Less than 10 minutes later Jen walked out with her arm in a huge cast and a sling over her shoulder to keep it up.
She smiled sadly at me and said, 'I guess no more skiing for me today.'
I laughed out loud at her humour over the situation and pulled her close to me.
'I'm sorry you're hurt baby, but I'm glad it's not worse' I told her.
'This hurts a lot' she pouted.
'Let's get you back to the room to rest.' I told her.
'Actually, I'm hungry, can we eat?' She asked. It took me by surprise but I nodded in agreement. I wasn't hungry but if she was that's all that mattered.
We made our way to the restaurant in the hotel and sat down next to the fire in one corner of the room.
'Are you dizzy?' I asked.
'No, not really. It just hurts.' she told me. 'I'm sorry I ruined your last day of skiing, go back out there.' She finished.
She must be mad. There was no way I was going to leave her to ski by myself when she had just broken her arm and gave me the fright of my life.
I shook my head. 'No way I'm leaving you.'
She sighed as the food arrived. She was having trouble cutting it up, so I took it off her and cut her food into small amounts so she wouldn't need to use two hands.
'I'm causing you all kinds of trouble.' She mumbled watching me cut the food up for her.
'What are you talking about?' I asked gobsmacked she would say such a thing.
She shook her head and refused to look in my eyes.
'Baby?' I persisted.
She sighed. 'First, I've caused you trouble because someone spotted us and now it's news all over Korea, now I've gone and broken my arm and you have to cut up my food like I'm a child.' Her voice was sad and nothing at all like herself.
'Jen,' I began reaching for her good hand on the table. She looked up at me from under her eyelashes.
'You didn't do anything, none of this is your fault. I should have taken better care of you, been more careful.' I was blaming myself.
She took a deep breath before she spoke again. 'Are you sure this is still worth it to you? All the trouble waiting for us back in Korea, cutting my food and now having to help me with my broken arm. Do you still love me enough?'
I couldn't believe what she was asking. 'Why would you ask that? Of course, it's all still worth it to me. Of course, I still love you. I will never stop loving you. We will see how bad things are when we get back, but nothing will stop me wanting to be with you. And if you broke all of your limbs I would carry you around on my back forever.' I smiled at her. She giggled shyly my joke bringing her back to reality.
'I'm sorry, my love. I love you too.' She smiled back.
