Shae walked with Cody as the moon fell from the sky. People began to exit from bars, from apartments, from alleyways, from cars. The sun rose, bringing glorious light that painted the sky with oranges and yellows. The street soon buzzed with activity, and the fugitives were right in the middle of it.
"Whadda we do?" Cody whispered to Shae, a stranger to crowds and people in general.
"Keep walking." He nodded, and stared at his feet. They continued in this manner for not five minutes before Shae picked up the pace. Cody was confused; he didn't smell anything. Nevertheless, he followed his guide and matched Shae's speed.
"Faster," Shae hissed, "They're catching us."
"I don't smell anything." Shae didn't respond, and instead began to jog down the middle of the street.
"Don't look back," the owl warned.
Without thinking, Cody did just that.
Suddenly, screams erupted from the mass of people as a giant wolf-like creature lunged through the crowd at Cody. He ducked, and the beast rolled across the ground and into Shae.
Shae, however, was more aggressive in his tactics. His fists glowed with an intense sky blue light that made the creature disintegrate to black dust as he hit it furiously. More followed, descending upon the pair like a swarm of locusts.
"Run!" Shae yelled, black dust and blue glow trailing behind him. Cody was already obeying, and Shae had to catch up to him.
The pair ran between bystanders, over and around vehicles, through alleyways.
After twelve blocks, a passerby screamed in pain. A wolf had attacked her, and the others were quick to join.
Shae immediately turned around, but Cody kept running. He hadn't noticed the cry, or that Shae had turned around, or that he was being followed by strangers. He just kept running until he collapsed in an alleyway, cold, alone, and afraid.
