"She loves the smell of warm coffee, bloomed roses, and new beginnings"
"I can't believe mom!" Rory groaned, as I sighed, pouring myself a cup of coffee to go. It was our first day at Chilton, and Mom had unfortunately woken up late. I could hear her run around upstairs, as I grabbed my backpack and went into the car. When Mom and Rory finally got into the Jeep, I looked at moms tyedyed shirt and jean shorts, and thought: Well this is going to be an interesting day...
By the time Rory and I finally got to school, greeted the headmaster and Grandma, we had to do separate welcome interviews. Rory went first, and by the time she got out, I could tell how upset she was. Oh dear.
"Hello, Headmaster Charleston" I said, as I came into the office and sat down. I pinched some skin in my hand, as I crossed my legs and tried my best to not show how nervous I felt. This morning had been such a chaos of emotion with running late and everything, I was just glad I could say hello properly.
"Hello Victoria, how are you?" He asked politely as he began skimming through my resume from high school.
"Good, sir. How are you?" I replied, clasping my hands together to not fidget. I watched as he looked over the papers, nodding his head, and his seeming interest in the content.
"Good. Now, what do you want to be?" He asked.
"A doctor, specifically a surgeon" I said, which caused him to raise his eyebrow a bit and look at me a bit more closely.
"Different from your sister, I see " he said, looking more deeply into my resume.
"Yes" I replied, simply.
"Now, I notice you have ballet dance and teaching, as well as science club as your extracurricular activities. More than what your sister had on hers. Did you look into Chilton's programs?" He asked. Whereas Rory had not a single athletic bone in her body, I had been dancing since we started ballet when we were 5. I starred in most of Ms.Patti's recitals, and even helped on weekends and after school for her.
"Yes, sir. I planned to audition for the dance program and become involved with the medical learning program you have" I said, specifically. The way he was looking at me made me feel sweaty and uncomfortable - not in a sexual manner, but one in a manner that made me feel like i was under a microscope for inspection.
"Well you're much more prepared in comparison to your sister, but Chilton is much harder than Stars Hollow. It's extremely demanding and you're already very far behind. Your grandparents are my good friends, as I was telling your sister, but that will do you no good here" he said sternly.
"Of course sir" I said, as he handed me my file.
"Go with your sister to get yourself oriented" he said, leading me out. I nodded, and left to go find Rory.
"Well that was intimidating" Rory said.
"No kidding" I said, as we walked through the halls together.Hours later:
"Hey, how was the day?" I asked as Rory and I met up at our lockers after classes. She rolled her eyes and opened hers. Our bags were slowly pilling up with books and binders.
"I feel so far behind already. This girl Paris is terribly annoying and rude, although I did break her project. Thenthis guy Tristan won't stop calling me Mary" Rory complained. I nodded.
"That's awful. I'm sorry" I said, closing my locker.
"How about you?" She asked.
"All I've been getting is stares, nothing too major" I said, waiting for her to finish. Honestly, the girls and guys in my classes seemed ok for now, nothing like Rory described."Ohh Mary's got a sister! What's your name?" A guy asked as he came over with his friend with brown hair came over. The blonde leaned against the locker next to Rory, as the brunette stood next to him and looked at me.
"Tory, this is Tristan. Tristan, this is Tory, my twin sister" Rory introduced begrudgingly.
"Pleasure to meet you. This is my friend William" he introduced, and I gave a fake smile to both of them. William was staring at me with a seductive look on his face.
"Yea... we're gonna go now" I said, as I took Rory's arm and led her to where mom would be parked.By the time we got home, I had to go straight to work catching up on all the notes. I started working diligently on the stack of work I was going to have to catch up on as well as do the work for tomorrow. I sighed loudly, as I became increasing overwhelmed at the amount of work lay before me.
"Wanna get pizza with Lane and Mom?" Rory asked coming into the living room. I sighed, looking at my notes.
"Nah, just bring me back some?" I asked, as she nodded.
"You're not coming?" Mom asked as she saw me still doing notes.
"Can't. Gotta love the bricks of notes I have to take, and a spot opened up for ballet audition tomorrow so I need to finish this as soon as possible" I said, a bit anxious. Mom smiled.
"You got those athletic genes from your father for sure" mom said, winking as she left with Rory. The next day, I waited anxiously after school for my audition. I had on my usual ballet slippers, tutu, leotard, tights and hair pulled back into a tight bun. I forgot something in my locker, but most people had already gone home so I was okay with going in my outfit to my locker.
With my luck however, William was there.
"Well, fancy seeing you here, prima ballerina" William teased as I rolled my eyes.
"I've got dance audition" I explained as finally got my locker open and grabbed my forgotten book.
"Hm, good luck. Break a leg, princess" he said, emphasizing the princess part, and I left quickly back to the auditorium for auditions."Grandma?" I asked confused, as I saw her sitting in the auditorium seats.
"Hi sweetheart. I wanted to be here to show support" Grandma said, smiling as she looked slyly over to the dance coaches. I sighed, but gave her a smile regardless. Mom was going to be mad that she was here, but if by being here, she helped me get a spot, I wasn't going to complain.
"Okay, well I have to get up there. Thank you for coming" I said, genuinely as I got on stage for auditions. The audition went well- I got the spot! The other girls auditioning just missed a bunch of the moves and even without Grandma there, I think I would have gotten it.
"Congratulations darling! Oh do you want to celebrate?" Grandma asked, excitedly as she hugged me outside of the auditorium.
"I've got a lot of work to do Grandma, I'm sorry" I said honestly, as we walked out of the auditorium together. I could see her face drop a bit
"Of course. Now let me drive you home. It's late" she offered, and that I couldn't deny. It was late, and the next bus came in an hour. Sorry mom..."She came to your dance audition? That woman.." mom said, annoyed as we sat on the floor and had take out. I shrugged my shoulders
"It's fine mom, I was glad she was there." I said, and she looked at me with a frown.
"Really?"
"Yea, she knew some of the coaches and it helped me be more comfortable and confident. The other girls were nervous wrecks who tried out, which helped my case" I explained, as my mom chuckled.
"Well ok then. I'm happy you got it. Congrats. I'm so proud" mom said, genuinely as she hugged me tightly again. Rory looked over at me and smiled.
"Now we just have to find you a sport and we'll be all set" Mom said to Rory. I smiled at her.
"Which team do we want to lose?" I said sarcastically, smirking as they both chuckled.
"Debate team. It's a physical sport how us Gilmore play it" mom quipped. We all laughed.Later that night, Dean texted me.
Dean: Hey! How are you?
Tory: Hey! Good. How are you?
Dean: Good. How's your new school?
Tory: It's tough, really challenging. But I got the spot in the dance program tonight
Dean: Congratulations! That's amazing
Tory: Thanks! How's Stars Hollow High?
Dean: Same as always...
Tory: I figured. But it's different from Chicago for you at least
Dean: True. Well I got to go. My sister needs me. Talk to you later?
Tory: Yea of course. Talk to you later
My insides were jumping for joy.
