I rubbed my eyes roughly, tightening my scarf around my neck and grabbing my sweater. It was snowing again today and, while I loved white days and cold mornings, I much preferred being indoors for these types of days. I promised Hagrid I'd help him feed his creatures today – it also coined me a few extra credit points. It was going to be me and a few other, unnamed, students. I looked out the window again, pouting slightly as I thought of what Tom might be doing on such a soothing day. It was Friday after classes, the beginning of the weekend. I groaned, shoving my face in my hands. Had he gone out with Valerie? Had he enjoyed it? Would they go out again? Stop thinking about him. He isn't thinking about you – he made that clear. I shook my head, clearing my throat and breathing deeply as I tried to stop myself from tearing up.
I slowly trotted through the snow, regretting agreeing to help Hagrid – it isn't like I needed the extra credit. Maybe I just needed something else to think about, every time I had a quiet moment to myself, I'd see green patterns and curly brown hair.
"(Y/N)!" I slowed my walking, turning my head to see Derek – the Hufflepuff boy Tom suggested I go out with. I sighed mentally, but plastered a wide smile on myself. "Where you off to in this kind of weather?" I looked ahead of me, toward the woods where Hagrid's house was.
"I promised Hagrid I'd help him with something – a chore kind of." I began to walk again, hoping he'd get that I was trying to get where I was going. He fell into step with me.
"Sounds rough! But, it's very nice of you to help out." I didn't say anything, only nodded. Derek was nice, and he was someone anyone could easily like – but, he wasn't Tom. And that wasn't going to change. "So, I've been meaning to ask you something." His hands went into his pockets as he shuffled a little closer to me, our pace still slow. "I was talking to Tom the other day–"
"Tom?" I interrupted him, stopping in the snow and looking at him in confusion. "I'm sorry, and I don't want you to take any offense but, what would you two have to talk about? He's not very inviting to Hufflepuffs." He shrugged.
"He seemed to take a friendly liking to you." Friendly. "He actually came up to me. He told me – god, this is weird, he told me that he thinks we would have fun in each others company." I narrowed my eyes at him. "So, I was wondering if you would like to go out – with me? I've never really thought of us... together, I mean, but it could be fun!" I scoffed lightly. Not at Derek's proposal, but at Tom thinking it was okay to meddle in my love life – or, my life in general.
"That's very nice, Derek – really. I'm just not looking for anything right now. I – I actually like someone else. It wouldn't be fair to you if I accepted your offer while I still had feelings for someone else." I bit my lip, nervous for his reaction. He looked at me confused.
"I'm sorry, I – I just thought – Tom said you liked me." My jaw clenched at his words, my hands shaking as I curled them into fists.
"Did he? Well, I'm sorry. I'll have to talk to Tom about keeping his fucking nose out of my life." I smiled sweetly at him, ignoring his shocked expression at my poor choice of words. "Excuse me, Derek, I have something I need to do. Hagrid is looking for me." I turned away from him, not allowing him to get a last word in as I walked the rest of the way to Hagrid's house.
