"Can you turn my in-ear up, please?" You did a vocal exercise into the microphone, testing the volume. You gave the sound-guy a thumbs-up. "Can we play the track from the beginning?" You heard the familiar bass sound, bopping your head to your track as you got ready to sing.
Being a rising R&B singer took a toll on you, it was proved to be difficult. Being black and a woman made things that much harder – being in your early twenties, fresh out of university and trying to top artists like Kehlani and SZA came to be stressful at times, but it was what you wanted. You were welcomed very warmly in the industry – your material was true to who you were, which was idolized and appreciated, which also made your rise to stardom fairly quick. You got to meet many people in the industry, singers and movie stars alike.
"Cut the track!" You looked back to see your manager walking on stage, her phone in her hand with an email opened. "I've got big news!" You stepped away from the microphone, taking one of the in-ears out and nodding for her to continue. "You just got asked to be on Jimmy Fallon." Your eyes widened – this would be your first television appearance.
"Shut up!" You excitedly took the phone out of your manager's hand, reading over the email once, twice, the third time you couldn't help the squeal that escaped you as you jumped around. You grabbed one of your managers hand with your free one and encouraged her to jump with you, laughing along with her. She stopped jumping, trying to get you to settle down while her laughter never ceased.
"Okay, okay, we need to work on a setlist! Three songs – and, you need to rehearse for tonight's show!" You stopped jumping, smiling widely as you nodded. "Alright, go rehearse, we'll talk about the setlist for the show next week, tonight in the hotel room. She was walking away when you realized you'd only be the musical guest.
"Wait, Stephanie!" Your manager turned back around, looking at you with a raised eyebrow. "Who's the other guest on the show?" She shrugged, looking at her phone. She went to the website and looked at the show's schedule.
"Laura Harrier – the girl from the new Spider-Man movie?" You nodded, your composure calm as you turned away from her, hearing the sound of her heels as she made her way backstage. You breathed in and out, walking back to the microphone as you signaled for the track to be played from the beginning again.
You'd met your fair-share of movie stars – none that you actually had a liking for. This was going to be interesting.

"Show starts soon, you ready?" You breathed in, holding it while shaking your head dramatically. "You perform in front of bigger crowds than this – why are you so nervous?"
"This is live television!" You were on the verge of tears as you thought of all the possibilities that could go wrong – forgetting your lyrics, dropping the microphone, freezing, sounding awful, not censoring yourself, falling on your ass –
"I remember my first TV appearance." You turned around, seeing Laura standing at your dressing room entrance. You sat up from your seat at the couch and crossed the room. "Sorry for eavesdropping – I wanted to meet you before the show. I'm such a huge fan." She stuck her hand out, which you gladly took – despite your sweaty palms.
"Me too! A fan, I mean – of you. I watched Homecoming, like, six times in theaters." You inwardly cringed at your confession, shaking your head. Laura only laughed, finding your bashfulness endearing.
"You'll be fine by the way – do what you do at your shows, and they'll love you." Laura's name was called, her cue on the show coming up. "I have to go – good luck! I'll be watching." Laura smiled, winking at you as she rushed behind the stage manager. You had registered what she said after she left – 'do what you do at your shows'... meaning, she had been to one of your shows.
You walked back into your room, sitting on the couch as you played with your tight curls, adjusting your over-sized shirt and watched the show start from there. You were due to go on after Laura – during the commercial break.
"Less nervous?" You looked at your manager, her knowing how important those words from Laura might've been. You nodded slightly, a small smile on your face.
"Please welcome, Liz Allan from Spider-Man Homecoming – Laura Harrier!" You glanced back at the TV as Laura walked out with a wide smile on her face, waving at the crowd. You watched as she talked about how she prepared for her part, how she felt about the fact that the majority of the cast were people of color. Jimmy then went to ask the all-common question – "Are you single?" Laura laughed, nodding slowly. "What do you look for in a guy?" She shrugged.
"I'm not picky and I'm pretty open to anything and everybody. Whoever I date, I'm sure it'll come naturally with them." You took into account her choice of words – not using specific pronouns. Your palms began to grow slightly sweaty again and you became nervous for a new reason as you overanalyzed her few words.
You were called out of your room as Jimmy called for a commercial break. You went off to the front of the stage, waving at the people that noticed you. Laura passed you, squeezing your hand.
"Good luck," she whispered, a smile on her face as she went to go back to her dressing room. You gulped, your hands running down your thighs as you smiled nervously at the crowd. The lights dimmed on you and there was a spotlight on Jimmy. You didn't pay attention to your introduction – only focusing back in when you heard your name and the stream of applause that followed it.

"You did great! Nothing to be nervous about!" You smiled as you rushed to hug your manager.
"I know! Once I hit the first note, it was smooth-sailing!"
"I could tell," you looked over your manager's shoulder, seeing Laura standing there with a smile on her face. "You did fantastic!" You smiled, walking around Stephanie and standing in front of Laura.
"Thanks! You were great out there." You both were silent as you stood there just smiling at each other, shyly. "Uh – Laura?" She looked up from her shoes, pushing her hair behind her ear. Her eyes looked big, brown. "Earlier – you said you were single and that you were open to any and everything and I just – I guess, uh," you looked up to see her smile widening, giving you the extra push to ask what you wanted to, "would you maybe want to go get coffee or lunch or something – with me? Would you like to go on a date... with me?"
"Yes," she said without hesitation, frowning when she heard her name being called. "I actually have another interview to go to, but, here," she opened her bag, taking out a pen and grabbing your hand. "This is so cliché but I don't have time to give you my phone." She capped her pen after writing her number down on the back of your hand and walked away quickly. "I'm expecting you to put that to good use – and soon!" You smiled as she disappeared, nodding to yourself.
"I definitely will."
