The truth begins to expose itself

Sam was sitting quietly by himself, enjoying the peace and quiet that accompanied getting up early.

However, being up early also meant dealing with the horrible, bone chilling cold that hung around the early hours.

Even with a steaming hot cup of coffee between his hands and his heavy jacket on over his PJ's, Sam could still feel the cold sinking in through his skin and into his bones. It was a sure sign that the strangely warm Fall was fading away into full on Winter.

"Cold enough for you?"

Sam looked up to see his younger cousin, Adam standing by the door.

Smiling and nodding slightly in response, Sam took a sip of his still scalding drink and looked back over the peaceful lake.

"Why the hell are you sitting out here then?"

Sam simply waved his hand in front of him, gesturing to the calm view.

"Wow, it is pretty I guess," Adam took a seat next to Sam on the small bench. He didn't seem to mind Sam's silence, but it turned out he was suspicious about it.

"So, uh, I know this is so not what you probably feel like talking about right now, but what's happened to you?"

Looking at his cousin with a sharp, questioning expression, followed by a dismissive frown.

"Oh cut the crap Sam, the other's may not know just what things John was capable of, and they may not be able to see the truth in your eyes, but I'm your cousin and I've known you my whole life."

Sam gave him a where-are-you-going-with-this look.

"Well, I'm just worried about you, Mikey is too, we know something else has been going on, and after the whole thing in Detroit-"

"No," Sam says quietly.

Adam blinked, and for a moment his disarmed expression made him look even younger than he already was. In fact, when Sam thought about it, it was hard to believe they were only a year and a half apart when they looked like they had a bigger age gap.

"Sam, you can't just forget something like that, hell I can't forget it."

Sam let his head drop in sadness, pulling up his phone to type what he couldn't say.

I was scared, and I'm sorry I dragged you into that.

"You were nearly dead, thats what you were, and I didn't tell anyone because you asked me not to."

Sam didn't have a reply for that.

"Do you know what its like to get a call from your cousins, who had seemed to disappeared from the face of the earth with no contact for over two years, and it turns out that he's almost dead?"

Sam shrugs, he couldn't think of anything else that he could do.

"Look, I'm sorry Sam, I know its not your fault but this is the first chance we've had since... the accident, to really talk."

Sam snorts, raising his eyebrow at Adam's choice of words.

"Yeah, I didn't think that sentence through, did I?"

Shaking his head, Sam bumped shoulders with his cousin.

"But you have spoken more since Dean's accident than you have before, maybe because of a certain golden haired trickster?"

Shoving Adam lightly, Sam goes back to watching the peaceful view, their conversation haunting his brain.

Sure, he had had a rough few years, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. At least he hoped it wasn't.
