What's up, Doc?

Sam sat there on the hard concrete path, staring blankly at the golden haired boy in front of him, eyes wide in disbelief. Was that really.....

Sam freaked, he was already dealing with too much, so he stood up quickly and ran away from the bewildered Gabe look-alike because there was no way in hell that he had just ran into Gabriel Novak just like he had nearly 5 years ago now.

But what if that had been Gabe? What if he had just blown his chance to see Gabriel once more and talk to him? Sam couldn't think about that right now, he refused to think about that. Because his father was dead and he still had to process that cold fact.

Dean. Someone would have to break it to him, Sam had to go back and he knew that. He was just struggling with the idea of going back to that place, he couldn't face the fact that he would be forced to accept his father's death that he had just witnessed.

Sam's feet begin dragging him back to the hospital, but he walked unseeing through the streets, phone hanging loosely in his hand as he tried to think of someone he could text. He didn't want to go through this alone.

And maybe it was the shock of seeing someone that looked so much like the guy he had once, and probably still did at that, loved. But Sam found himself sending a message to the one person he knew would listen.

The chilly breeze hit him, making him speed up as he made it back onto the same street as the hospital. He ran straight up to Dean's room, eyes watering as the realisation of everything hit him. If Dean were to go now.... he would be utterly alone.

Shaking off the feeling of hopelessness, he takes his seat beside Dean's sleeping form once more. Lisa stirs briefly before falling asleep again in her awkward position, and besides the constant beeping and humming of the machines the whole room was silent.

Sam was dreading having to break this news to Dean, because as much as they both had hated their father, Dean still held family above all else and this news would break him. A part of him just wished that Dean would keep sleeping but apparently that was too much to ask for because minutes later Dean's eyes were fluttering open.

"Sammy?" He croaks out.

Sam stared silently at his brother, frozen as he tried to not look as if he had witnessed the death of their father.

"Of course, forgot you couldn't talk," Dean had a pained smile on his face, but Sam relaxed slightly at his brother's attempt at humor.

'At least you can remember that, do you remember anything else, the accident?' Sam signed this slowly so Dean could see what he was saying.

Dean scrunched up his nose, obviously trying to think. "Uh," Dean clears his throat. "I remember the accident, kinda, there was the headlights coming at us out of the blue and then next thing I know we're flipping through the air... I remember a sharp pain in my head and that's that. Next thing I know I'm waking up here with you staring at me oddly."

Sam bit his lip, maybe the news could wait until after his brother had had time to adjust.

"Where's Lis?"

Sam sighed in relief, at least Dean remembered his girlfriend.

"And Cassie, is he here?"

Sam frowned, 'Cas?'

"Yes Sammy, Castiel, our friend? My- wait how is he my boyfriend if Lisa is..." Dean trailed off, looking confused and sad. "Sammy why is everything so foggy? I can't remember what happened when."

Sam's heart broke at the fearful confusion in his brother's voice, but he didn't know how to help him. 'Dean... we haven't seen any of the Novak's in four years.'

Dean frowned, shaking his head slightly and mouthing the word no with his lips. But even as he did this Sam watched the cogs turning behind Dean's green eyes, realising that his brother wouldn't lie about that to him.

"But, Cas... Why haven't we tried reaching out to them?"

Sam couldn't do anything but sit there silently.

"Why did we just blindly follow dad, god we must be so stupid to let people like that go."

Sam winced, 'Dean there's something else-'

"Dean!" Lisa sat up, rubbing her eyes and rushing over to Dean's side. "Oh thank god you're awake."

Dean rubbed his head, wincing and Sam reached over to press the button to call the nurse in.

"Yeah, I'm fine Lis, just a bit befuddle is all," Dean pushed himself up so he was half sitting up, supported by the pillows.

"Sam? Oh thank god Dean is okay."

They all look up to see a familiar blond standing in the doorway.

'Jess! I'm so glad you're here!' Sam signed, standing up and hugging his friend tightly. Aside from Dean, and Lisa, Jessica was the only person in the world that Sam had let in after leaving Lawrence all those years ago.

"Hey Sam, Dean how are you?"

Dean smiled at Jess, "nice to see you Jess, how longs it been now?"

Jess chuckled, "yeah, I guess its been a while, school has been hard this semester."

Sam relaxed as no one else brought up the Novak's, which was still a hard topic to talk about, and he sits back down. Jess dragged the spare plastic chair over and sat beside Sam, grabbing his hand.

Sam smiled gratefully at Jess, pushing the golden haired boy from his mind as he squeezed her hand. Lisa sat on Dean's other side, gripping his hand tight as the nurse came in with the doctor close behind.

"Well Mr Winchester, all your vitals look good..." The nurse trailed off, looking like there was something else on her mind. Sam knew what would be coming out of her mouth next and holds onto Jess's hand like it was a lifeline.

"Unfortunately, we have some bad news for you."

Dean frowned, "what is it?"

The nurse looks back at the Doctor, who steps forward with a solemn expression.

"What's up Doc?" Dean chuckles dryly, his expression serious despite the joke.

"As you know, both you and your father were taken here for treatment following the accident, and while you have pulled through despite your head injury... well we are sorry to tell you that your father has passed away due to his extensive internal and external injuries."

The room was silent for several heartbeats, looks of shock shared by the four, even Sam, who had already known this, found it hard to hear. Because now the doctor had said it, it was real.

"Da-dad's dead?" Dean frowned, "but how? He's the toughest man I know."

"I'm sorry Dean, but he died earlier this morning."

Sam looked down at his feet, tears gathering in his eyes. Jess kept a comforting hold on his hand, and Lisa was holding Dean's.

That was when a low voice spoke up from behind the doctor, familiar to the brothers and  stirring up old memories.

"Sam? Dean?"

A/N:

Hey guys!
So I am officially moved down to our new place on the outskirts of a new city, and now I can breath, take a break and publish a chapter before we start the huge job of unpacking.

Ooooo who's voice was that at the end of the chapter? Time will tell my friends.

Should I bring Bobby into this story? I feel like he would be an interesting character to write XD

Some key events are coming up to push the plotline along, and I promise there aren't packed full of sad feels.... well not all of them *laughs and fist bumps a certain Horseman*

Until next time! *Gives out free pancakes 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞*

Peace out, Wayward readers🌈😇🌈
