Everyone is somewhere in a universe, in a galaxy, in a solar system, on Earth. Sandee Li is currently in Europe, in England (a made up country not to be confused with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), in New Yorkshire County, in the city of Saint's Hill, in Saint's Hill Academy...
...standing in a line, just like everyone else. Saint's Hill Academy's gym looks like an airport hangar, and is just as big as an airport hangar. It even has a few paper aeroplanes in it! But whether it really was an airport hangar decades ago, the world will never know.
She listens in to her classmates muttering things about an event called "Sportsfest," something she doesn't seem to care too much about, but you probably can tell that she actually will.
"Guys, keep quiet for a moment," says the class rep, Kim—the more outgoing half between her and Kel, her twin sister.
"What house are you in, Sandee?" asks Ann. "For SportsFest?"
Ann was a bit young for an 8th year, seeing as she only turned twelve a week or two ago, not to mention her rather underwhelming height of five feet standing. Her big brain (and head) make up for all of it.
"House?" Sandee repeats. "Hufflepuff."
"You—" says Ann. "You have checked your e-mail, haven't you?"
"I did check my e-mail... a few days ago."
"Oh, fuck you, Sandee. You're smarter than that."
"Language? Please?"
"How about you, Ann? What's your house, then?"
"Casa de Crucifijo, the white team. I'm with the twins; we got a list of our house members - well, actually, we didn't, but because I'm so smart, I checked out the list of emails on the carbon copy. And, well, too bad for you, Sandee, oof!" states Ann. "Ya ain't with any of us cool kids, buckaroo."
"That's alright, I didn't want to be in the same house as you, anyway."
She gasps. "Anyway, I don't know the names of the other houses yet, so be sure you fucking check your goddamn email today, alright?"
"Ehhh," responds Sandee. "Well—"
Don't tell her I actually forgot my password...
"I don't think everyone's gotten emails yet," says Isobel. Her hair is neatly tied in a bun with a thin yellow ribbon.
"Why? What's your house?" asks Sandee.
"We're both Campana," she answers. "But some of my friends don't have emails from their houses yet, and they checked their emails last night."
"Other friends? Like who?"
"Aurelia."
"Oh, that sucks," says Sandee.
"I'm sure I know the answer, but are you signing up for cheer-dance?"
"Me? No."
"I am," says Ann.
Isobel rolls her lips to the side. "K."
Critical hit!
"What are the other houses?" asks Sandee. "You said you're the white team, right, Ann?"
"Mhm."
"We're yellow," says Isobel. "And there's definitely a red and blue team, too."
"Gee, kinda farfetched to assume one team will be two colours—"
Soon a man, whom everyone would recognize as Mr. Matthews, walks up to the stage and raises his right hand. The entire gym goes quiet.
