Sandee zips her racquet bag open. She gets her racquet out for the badminton singles.
"Campana against Navio," Sandee thinks. "I wonder who my opponent is."
Sandee enters the central badminton court, supervised by Coach Ripley.
"Oh, you're Sandee, right?" Coach Ripley asks.
"Yes," Sandee answers. "Why?"
"I really expected you here in badminton," she replies.
"Yeah, everyone does."
"You know that everyone's signed up in both singles and doubles, right?"
A/N: technically that's not possible, but the other half that's not in singles will probably end up in mixed
"Yeah. But how and when do we go to each?"
"You notice there are three courts," says Coach Ripley. "The one on the left is for men's singles. The one in the center is for women's singles. Then, on the right, they're playing mixed."
"When's doubles?" Sandee asks.
"Oh, doubles is after lunch. Finals are tomorrow."
"Matches for doubles?"
"First round, Campana vs. Navio. That's all we know for now."
A short Navio girl runs to the court. "Sorry I'm late," she apologizes.
Is that Stephanie White, who shares the same surname as Ysobel but isn't related to her in any way?
"It's fine," responds Coach Ripley. "Let's start. Ready your racquets!"
"I'm gonna racquet your clank," Sandee intimidates.
"Nah, I don't think so," Stephanie replies.
"Which coin face are you picking?" asks Coach Ripley.
"Heads!" Sandee answers immediately.
"Ouch, Sandee, you can get heads while the coin flips to tails, yeah, sure!"
Coach Ripley flips the coin. "Heads!"
Sandee smiles as she gets passed a shuttle. "Ready, Steph?"
"Yeah, of course I'm ready!"
Sandee takes a step back. She lowers her racquet into a forehand position, then drops the shuttlecock, beginning the match. Stephanie hits it back with a backhand.
The shuttle goes back and forth between the two of them. Suddenly, Sandee smashes the shuttle down into Stephanie's side of the court, giving Sandee the first point.
"Sandee, serve," says Coach Ripley, marking off a point for Campana.
Sandee steps back again, readying her racquet for a low backhand serve.
She starts the next rally, and they constantly manage to hit back the shuttle to the other side of the net.
At one point, Stephanie hits the the shuttle, and it flys straight forward, hitting the net.
"No," responds Stephanie. "So what's the score now? 0-2?"
"2-0," corrects Sandee, starting up another forehand serve. Countering, Stephanie then launches the shuttle flying forwards and up.
What the hell?
Coach Ripley marks off a point for Navio. It was now 2-1.
"Navio, serve!"
"Jesus, do you not know my name, Ripley?" mumbled Steph, receiving the shuttlecock.
They scored point after point after point.
8-5.
15-11.
20-17.
"I have twenty points," Sandee thinks. "Just one more."
Stephanie scores another point, making her score 18.
"Happy New Year!" Steph exclaims.
"Go Sandee!" a voice shouts from the background.
It was Vick.
