6. Adjective

Adjective (Adj) >> Kata Sifat

Definisi: kata yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan dan membatasi makna noun/pronoun.

Macam-macam Adjective:

A. Descriptive adjective: kata sifat yang menggambarkan noun yang dijelaskan. Urutan penulisan descriptive adjective secara ringkas adalah chaqusiatpashaco, yaitu:

1. Character (karakter)/Quality(kualitas): good, kind, honest, etc.

2. Size (ukuran): big, small, large, huge, short, high, tall, etc.

3. Age (umur): young, old, new, ancient, etc.

4. Temperature (suhu): hot, cold, warm, etc.

5. Participle, terdiri dari:

- present participle: interesting, amazing, boring, etc.

- past participle: amazed, interested, bored, etc.

6. Shape (bentuk): square, circle, round, triangle, etc.

7. color: (warna): green, red, yellow, black, brown, etc.

*Contoh penggunaannya dalam noun phrase (ingat, pola noun phrase adalah adjective + noun, dimana Head nya adalah noun). Penerjemahan disesuaikan dengan urutan adjective:

a. film baru yang menarik : new interesting movie

film: movie >> noun (H)

baru: new >> age (3)

menarik: interesting >> participle (5)

b. kucing hitam, besar dan rakus : greedy big black cat

kucing: cat >> noun (H)

hitam: black >> color (7)

besar: big >> size (2)

rakus: greedy >> character (1)

2. Limiting Adjective: kata sifat yang berfungsi untuk membatasi noun, baik dari segi jumlah ataupun posisi, terdiri dari:

1. article: kata sandang di depan noun yang berupa 'a, an, the'

- a/an (indefinite): a boy, a man, an apple, an hour, an egg, etc.

- the (definite): the moon, the earth, the sun, etc.

2. possessive adjective: kata sifat yang menunjukkan kepemilikan;

- from pronouns: my, your, our, their, his, her, its

my cat, our teacher, his mother, its tail, etc.

- from nouns: Elsa's friend, Harris' car, students' book, etc.

3. demonstrative adjective: kata tunjuk yang diikuti oleh noun

- This/ That + singular noun: this apple, that box, etc.

- These/ Those + plural noun: These apples, those boxes, etc.

4. numeral adjective: hitungan yang berfungsi sebagai adjective

- ordinal number (bilangan bertingkat): first, second, third, etc.

- cardinal number (bilangan pokok): one, two, three, etc.

- multiple (kelipatan): single, double, triple,....etc.

- fraction (pecahan): a half (½), a fourth/ a quarter (¼), ....etc.

5. indefinite quantity: some, many, much, a lot of, etc (selengkapnya bisa dicek pada materi Noun di bab 3) >> some books, many friends, much water, a lot of food, etc.

6. interrogative adjective: kata tanya yang berfungsi sebagai adjective, yaitu "whose, what, which" >> whose house, what movie, which book, etc.
