Noun Clause

Noun clause adalah clause (anak kalimat) yang berfungsi sebagai noun. Dalam kalimat, Noun Clause dapat menempati posisi seperti noun, yaitu:

a. as subject: What you said is true.

b. as object of verb: I know whom you love.

c. as object of preposition: We were concerned about how he would get the money.

d. as complement of subject (CS): The question is how I will get that scholarship.

Macam-macam Conjunction dalam Noun Clause

Sebagian besar conjunction dalam Noun Clause sama dengan conjunction yang ada di dalam Adjective Clause. Pola yang dimilikipun sama. Pembedanya adalah antecedent (noun yang menjadi rujukan conjunction). Conjunction dalam Noun Clause terdiri atas:

1. Question Word (WH - Question)

A. as Pronoun:

- who(ever): siapa(pun) >> untuk pronoun subject

- whom(ever): siapa(pun) >> untuk pronoun object

- what(ever): apa(pun) >> untuk pronoun subject/ object

- which: yang mana >> untuk pronoun subject/ object

Posisi:

a. as Subject

e.g.:

- Who will come here makes me wonder.

- Whom she loves is my brother.

- Whatever you do is not my business

b. as Object

e.g.:

object of Verb:

- She gets what she wants.

- of the good novels, I don't know which I should buy.

object of preposition

- She waved at who was standing next to me.

- He smiles at whom(ever) he meets.

B. as Modifier/ Adjective: whose, which, what

Note: ketiga conjunction tersebut diikuti oleh noun

a. whose menyatakan kepemilikan (possessive)

e.g.:

- Whose wallet was stolen is my neighbor.

- I want to know whose book Ann is reading.

b. which digunakan untuk merefleksikan sebuah pilihan dari jenis adjective

e.g.:

- Elsa offers me some interesting books to read. And I don't know which books I should read.

Which merujuk pada interesting

c. what digunakan untuk menunjukkan pilihan yang berupa noun adjunct/ classifier

e.g.:

John has visited Japan, China, and Thailand. And I don't know what countries he likes very much.
