Adverbial Clause (AVC) adalah clause/ anak kalimat yang berfungsi sebagai adverb/ penjelas main clause/ induk kalimat.
Posisi AVC dalam kalimat:
a. Initial position: AVC terletak di awal kalimat/ mendahului main clause. Biasanya ditandai dengan tanda koma (,)
e.g.: When I was studying, the phone rang.
b. Middle position: AVC terletak di tengah, diantara subject dan verb main clause. Harus menggunakan tanda koma (,) sebagai pemisah subject of main clause dengan verb-nya.
e.g.: My friend, when I was walking in the park, waved at me.
c. Final position: AVC terletak di akhir kalimat. Untuk AVC of time, place, result, purpose and degree tidak memerlukan tanda koma (,). Namun untuk AVC lainnya terkadang menggunakan tanda koma (,)
e.g.:
- I have met many people since I moved here.
- He has very few friends, because he is selfish.
Macam-macam AVC
1. AVC of Time: AVC yang menyatakan waktu terjadinya suatu peristiwa.

e.g.:
- When(ever) I see her, I say hello.
- She always helps her mother before she goes to school.
- They are going to come soon. I'll wait here until they come.
- The first time I went to Kediri, I went to Simpang Lima Gumul.
- I loved you the instant (that) I saw you.
- He will have finished his work by the time he goes out on a date tonight.
- Call me at the moment that you get the result!
Note: penggunaan tenses dalam AVC of Time dapat dilihat dalam bab Sequences of Tenses.
Conjunction dari AVC of Time dapat didahului oleh intensifier berupa not*, only*, just, even, ever, right, long, half an hour (or other quantities), immediately, directly.
e.g.:
- It started to rain just aswe got to the park.
- She knew loneliness only after her father died.
- Long beforeshe has examination, she has prepared for it.
*Note: Jika intensifier berupa not atau only diikuti oleh conjunction AVC of time terletak di awal kalimat, maka main clause (MC) harus berpola Vaux + S + Vord (+O)
