Chapter 4
Hazel
Hazel thought the Argo II was amazing. In the room Annabeth pointed out was hers, she ran in. Frank’s room looked like hers- a bed with no sheets, a desk and a computer, and the walls were a beautiful shade of gold. On the bed were different designs, stickers for the walls. Hazel hung up horse stickers. In letters, she put Hazel over her bed. When her room was a kingdom for horses and Rome, she rested for a moment.
She missed Arion. After the quest, he told Percy that he liked to wander. He would follow Hazel everywhere, though. He just didn’t like staying in the stables of Camp Jupiter.
Frank decorated his room with animals and archery. He was going on the Internet, so Hazel wandered.
Leo reminded her so much like Sammy. He joked around a lot, and he was jumping with energy. But how could Sammy be alive? Why this boy was named Leo instead of Sammy? Hazel was so confused.
Hazel walked by a window. Outside on the catwalk, she saw Piper and Jason in a tight embrace. Hazel stopped and crouched down to stay hidden.
She had missed Jason when he went missing. She had never liked Jason like a… boy. He was just a friend. And Piper was like his girlfriend.
They were talking. Hazel saw Jason’s lips moving. Piper’s eyes looked sad… and red. When Jason’s lips stopped moving, Piper’s lips moved slowly. A slow smile crept on both of their lips. They leaned in. And they kissed. Hazel felt herself smiling. They were perfect together. Hazel stood before she walked away.
In her room, she sat on her bed. Her spatha was against her wall. Annabeth had shown her the training room, but she didn’t want to train. She closed her eyes for a moment and was instantly pulled under.
But Hazel wasn’t tired. What was going on?
This isn’t a dream.
Hazel wanted to scream. It was Gaea, the goddess who possessed her mother and caused Hazel’s death in the forties. Thanks to Nico, her half-brother, Hazel got a second chance at life. But Nico was missing.
I’m not telling you where Nico is, Gaea warned. But Sammy Valdez is dead. Leo Valdez may be your only key to Sammy’s fate.
The image showed Leo. Fire was coming out of his hands. Gaea stood, covered in dirt. There was no sound, but Hazel thought Leo was crying. He opened his mouth like he was screaming, and threw fire at Gaea. The workshop where he was at fell apart.
Gaea ruined Leo’s life just like she had ruined Hazel’s. But what was the connection to Sammy?
If you want to find out the connection, talk to Leo Valdez, Gaea purred. I know I have done much to ruin lives, but, Hazel Levesque, I will show you something. A connection to Sammy Valdez, the connection you want.
Hazel was snapped back into reality. She touched her face. She wasn’t crying. She walked from the room. Frank was still on the computer. Thank the gods she didn’t know much about electronics. If she had been on the ground, precious jewels would be popping out of the ground by the second.
She passed Piper and Jason. They were holding hands and totally grinning at each other. Hazel grinned. They were probably officially together.
She walked until she found Leo steering the Argo II. There was a seat next to his. She sat down.
Leo looked at Hazel. “Oh, hi,” he said passively. “Uh, Hazel, right?”
