Recap: Silver light exploded everywhere. There was so much heat and pain. Piper couldn’t escape. She screamed and her knees gave way, dumping her onto the ground. Her head cracked against the hard gravel. She couldn’t even move. Her limbs ached and it felt like she was dipped in fire.
There was so much torture.
Then she realized she was destined to die. Her death was just not from falling off the cliff. She was dying from looking at the light from Athena herself.
The last thing Piper registered was pain.
Chapter 46
Jason
Jason opened his eyes, expecting everything to be fine. He saw the Doors of Death were closed tightly. That was good.
Then he saw Piper and Annabeth.
Annabeth was lying on her back, her face ashen gray, her bracelet next to her snapped. The charm of the owl that held the power of the Mark of Athena was shattered into pieces with silver smoke floating in wisps above it.
Piper lay in an awkward position. Her usually tan skin was ashen gray. All the color from her cheeks and lips were gone.
Hazel, looking much better now that the Doors of Death were closed, turned pale. “Oh my gods, what happened?”
Wide eyes, stiff with fear, Jason ran over to Piper. Her skin was cool. Her body was limp like a rag doll. No, he thought. He couldn’t lose her after everything that had happened before. They’d been through everything together. He shook her shoulder, expecting her to open her eyes and laugh and say it was all a joke…
“She’s dead, man.” Leo put his hand on Jason’s shoulder. He had tears in his brown eyes. “Annabeth is gone, too.”
Percy was holding Annabeth’s limp body and absolutely sobbing. He held her close and touched her curly hair. Everyone else was comforting him.
“Let her go,” Leo whispered.
Once again Jason looked down at Piper’s body. She wasn’t even a person anymore, just a body. Her bright soul was gone. So he carefully put her body on the ground. He was pulled to his feet by Leo.
Nico managed to get Percy away from Annabeth. He was limp with grief.
There were giant footsteps behind the demigods.
Porphyrion and Ephialtes stood, looking triumphantly down at the two dead girls on the rocks. They glanced up again.
“The Mark of Athena was always a curse,” Porphyrion boomed. “The girl should have known that.” He batted aside the two limp bodies.
And Jason snapped internally. Seeing his dead girlfriend getting just abused by that was beyond anger. He rose into the air, quivering.
“That’s it.” His voice was a snarl. “You want to play with dead bodies? Why don’t you become a dead body yourself?” He opened his hand and the biggest lightning strike he had ever summoned hit the two giants. He touched the ground and nearly fell over from a head rush. He caught his breath and saw Piper’s limp body.
That gave him enough courage to keep going.
He took out his gladius and began to slash the two giants who were stunned from the lightning shock. He kept slashing and stabbing. His mind wouldn’t let his arm quit.
