Chapter 45

Piper

Piper was thrown backwards. She spun head over heels. She expected to slam into the ground, but then she realized she fell right over the cliff. Fear gripped at her heart as she shrieked. She was falling. She was the one who was going to die. Hadn’t she had her fair share of torture?

Before she could easily splat into a pancake, the cliff face loomed inches in front of her. She clawed desperately at the cliff side. Her skin peeled off. Her blood made a trail as her hands tried to get her to stop.

At last, her foot found a small crevice so she jerked to a stop. She hugged the cliff side. Under her, the ground seemed much farther than it really was. Her palms stung. She managed to look at one hand. Her hand was covered in blood.

She sobbed. She was about to slip. Her palms were wet with blood, so they would just help with her sliding away.

Above her, Annabeth cried out as well. She was also sobbing. “It’s us, Piper,” she choked out. “We’re going to die."

This can’t be the end, Piper thought as tears dripped onto her shirt and slid down her armor. I can’t just die now!

From on top of the cliff, people were screaming.

Please someone help, Piper though desperately. She slid a little. A choked scream escaped her mouth.

Above her, someone yelled, “We have to get them!”

She nearly cried with relief when she saw Jason peer over the side of the cliff. He looked ready to leap off when suddenly a strong wind blew him backwards, away from the cliff ledge.

     Dylan.

     “No!” Piper yelled.

And that’s when her bloody hands could no longer hold her to the wall. She fell.

“No!” Annabeth shrieked above her. She also slipped and fell.

Tumbling through the air, Piper felt the tears stream her face. This was the end, the end of her. She was never going to see her father again. She was never going to give Leo horrible coffee. She was never going to…

Okay. She was never going to do a lot of things.

The ground seemed to loom below her. The air slapped her face. She closed her eyes, waiting for the end to come.

And then… she had arms around her. She was no longer falling. Maybe she was dead. She had died instantly… That was it… right?

“Gotcha, Piper,” a voice whispered in her ear.

She opened her eyes that were swimming in tears. She was sitting on Mrs. O’Leary. Annabeth was next to her. And Nico was holding her up.

She began to shake, because she realized how close she had been to death. She slumped against Nico. He patted her back.

“Come on, Piper. Are you okay?” he whispered.

     “You saved us,” she whispered.
