Ello, guys! As you can remember from the last chapter, Piper got her memory back, the Mark of Athena was burning through Rome, and Piper vanished. If Jason took it hard, think about everyone else! This chapter is mainly about what happened with the Mark of Athena and how it happened, Leo finding the others, and trying to get the group back together. Enjoy. :)

Chapter 26

Leo

Leo was perfectly alone until Annabeth showed up. Here’s what happened:

He was walking the street with his mortal money, getting ready to buy some coffee when Blondie came barreling into him.

“Gah,” he yelped as she stumbled back. “Annabeth, what are you doing here?”

“Help me do some research,” she begged. “Ever since Percy…” She suddenly got all teary-eyed. “Anyways, I’m doing some research on the Doors of Death. I found a really nice library. Come help me, please.”

With her probing frown, Leo nodded. She squealed and dragged him along. He got the feeling that she was losing her marbles.

The library was big and white. Leo knew that he would not like this place, while Annabeth gasped in awe. She stepped inside and immediately went to the librarian’s desk.

“Excuse me,” she said in a quiet voice. The old librarian turned his head. “Can you point me to the direction of the mythology section?”

“We don’t have a mythology section anymore,” the librarian growled in a thick Italian accent.

“Why not?” she demanded and clenched her fists.

“Nobody believes in myths anymore,” the librarian continued. “I mean, that era faded long ago. Nobody believes in Greek or Roman mythology. Now, run along.” He turned to a big novel.

They stomped off. Annabeth was fuming. Leo was uncomfortable, so he said, “Look, Annabeth, it’ll be fine if we just find the others and go find the Doors of Death together.”

“No,” she answered, and he was horrified to hear her voice tremble. “After Percy and I kind of… broke up, I just can’t face him, Leo!” She took a deep breath. “If people don’t believe about Athena, we’ll make them.”

He frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“Start a fire and make it into the Mark of Athena. Come on. You feel alone, don’t you? Please.” Her eyes turned big, like a puppy.

Leo stiffened. He did feel alone. Hazel couldn’t choose him, Annabeth was going nuts, Piper was going to go missing, and Leo wasn’t good enough.

     “I’ll do it.”

Annabeth beamed. “Thank you so much!” She pressed her bracelet to his hands. “I, Annabeth Chase, give Leo the power of the Mark of Athena.”

Power surged through Leo. He suddenly opened his palms, and fire exploded out, creating a pattern. He saw it. It was an owl. The Mark of Athena was burning.

     “Yes, yes,” Annabeth was muttering.

The fire stopped from Leo’s palms after about five minutes. He then heard people screaming for their lives, running around in terror.

“No, no!” Annabeth cried. “What did I do? Why did I do this?” She spun on her heel and began to run off.

“Ah, no,” Leo yelled. “Annabeth, help me put out the fire!” He cursed in Spanish. He tried to extinguish the fire, but it barely helped. “Why did I do this?” he yelled to himself. “Is it because I feel so alone?”
