🌸Faith (P.O.V)🌸
"So it's over just like that?" Rashida asked.
I silently nodded my head.
"Girl, whatchu' upset about then?" she said. "Y'all off the hook, so chill."
"Evan's dad stopping this whole investigation against us means he has to pay the price for it," I said.
"Well, we gone' let Evan and his dad do them. You outta all this, and that's what matters."
"Rashida, you don't understand how many times Evan had to give up what he loves and what's important to him because of his father. He always had to give something or the other up for Ray or me."
"Wait, who's Evan again?"
I sighed, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Who Evan is and what Evan gotta give up ain't our business," she continued. "Plus, didn't this boy play you enough? Imagine if Grandma or Uncle Alan ever found out that you were trapped in some murder case out here. You think Grandma will handle it well?"
"I know, but I'm just worried—"
"Worried 'bout who? Someone like that? Another best friend will come along, and he will once again leave you."
I picked up my bag, heading upstairs.
"I don't care how upset you are," she said, stopping me in my tracks. "I really don't give a f**k 'cause ion sugarcoat or nothin.' Only expect to hear the truth from me, and the truth is that boy done messed you—"
"He did!" I interrupted. "Evan did! But so what!? By repeating what he's done to me, are you finding pleasure? It's always been fun for you to watch me in pain, so I hope you're enjoying all of this."
"Mhm, I always have, but only because I hated that you left Iowa with your family, jus' like that. We've been best friends, and you abandoned me. I hated that you got to come here while I was stuck in Iowa without you. That's why I didn't want you to be part of my life again when you returned."
I sighed, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Faith, I ain't yo enemy here," she continued. "I wanted to ruin your life when you came back. But what was there to ruin when you were broken yourself? When you came to Iowa, you were beyond broken. You was so hurt. It was almost as if there was no life left in you. Seeing you like that, I couldn't get myself to do anythin' else to hurt you. You was jus' beyond miserable. And you know why you was like that?"
I sighed heavily, running my fingers through my hair.
"You was like that 'cause of that good-for-nothin' spoiled rich brat that yo ass is feelin' sorry for at the moment," she said. "He did that to you, and people like him wouldn't think twice 'bout doin' the same thing all over again. I'm just tryin' to protect you from gettin' hurt. No matter what happens, you are my family. I will always look out for you, and that's jus' what I'm tryna do, so stop being a bitch and let me look out for you."
"I don't need you to," I said bitterly.
"Fine, yo b*tch ass can get yo heart broken all over again. Don't come cryin' to us later when that rich brat hurts you."
She rolled her eyes, leaving the house.
I shook my head, heading to my room.

"Thank you for coming to meet me," Mary said as soon as I entered their apartment.
I nodded my head, sitting down.
"You look different," she said.
"It's because my hair is tied back," I said.
"It looks good like this."
