The homestead had slowly been filling up since Minho had arrived, I heard people running around outside. Every second was a painful one, I was starting to get scared. These doors weren't closing, that meant the grievers had all night to try and kill us. Someone is bound to get hurt. Or worse, die.
Minho was down stairs helping with bringing in crates, I was dying of boredom in here. I've got to move, I've got to do something to help. I'm gonna go crazy if I don't. Can't I help the med-jacks or someone in this damn building. I'm sick of being useless.
I climbed up from the floor, Barks dozing form snoring in the space next to me. I walked over to the door, turning the handle and looking out the door. The hallway was full, people walking up and down carrying supplies and some disappearing into rooms.
Why were there so many people in here?
I reached out and grabbed the shoulder of a boy I didn't know, he turned to me, a slight scowl on his face. His eyes met mine and immediately he shied away, holding a less aggressive expression. I was used to that, come's with the Newt package.
"Malaya?"
The boy said, and I swallowed, looking up and down the hall in confusion.
"What's going on?"
"Newt's called everyone into the homestead, they're barricading the doors and windows up and preparing to stay in here"
I nodded before thanking him, the boy left and after a few more minutes the halls were less packed, they all seemed to be escaping into rooms. All carrying their own blanket and pillow. So, we had the whole glade in here? That's going to be tight.
Without further thought I slipped out of the room and shut the door to keep Bark inside, to save the pooch from getting lost. I was really starting to get worried about all of this, it was getting insane now.
I went down the halls and stood on the end of the staircase, off to the side to allow people through. I was shocked to see the first floor of the homestead so packed full of people. Everyone in the glade was in the homestead I supposed, that was more than fifty boys all forced in here.
I scanned the room for anyone I recognised, it was hard to miss the leader and the boy I cared for. I watched Alby and Newt directing people up the stairs, handing out pillows and blankets to everyone. They were trying to assign rooms. They stood tall in the middle, standing out like spots on a dog. It must be the authority, or the courage they were putting on.
I looked around a little more before I found two more boys that I recognised, thank god. I nervously met Thomas and Minho's eyes as they headed towards me. They were coming up? I was way to relieved by this. Minho flicked his head, gesturing for me to go upstairs. He didn't look angry or anything, but I knew he wanted me to stay in my room. I was just trying to help, he should expect that from me now.
"Come on, you're in our room"
Minho said quickly before herding me back up the stairs. I guess the amount of time's I've been in sick or hurt just makes everyone think I'm fragile. I'm not, I can handle myself, I'm tough. How many times have I gotten back up after getting hurt?!
I rolled my eyes before ignoring the gesturing, this wasn't the time to be annoyed with everyone. I just needed to stiff it, I can complain when we're safe and not worrying about dying every ten seconds.
"Who else is in with us?"
"Newt and Alby, But more will come in later"
I nodded, quickly we went down the hall before walking into the room where I had just come from. Bark lifted his head and blinked his weak eyes as I walked over and slumped down to the floor. I sat next to the dog and went back to rubbing his head as both Thomas and Minho slipped into chairs in the corner of the room.
