Chapter 34. Cassidy

"Okay..." Harry said, "Deep breath. Don't think about it. Just sing. You'll be amazing. We believe in you. I believe in you..." He kissed me then.

He was trying to calm the nerves. It had already been two and a half months since I graduated and had been told that I was singing for Simon. They rented out the school auditorium and told our family and some other people from their record label. It wasn't a huge crowd, but I'd only ever sang to my shower head. Although it did seem very impressed, it was the only audience I've ever had. That I know of.

He looked at me and smiled one more time before he left to join the others.

I didn't look exceptional. I had a little more makeup on than usual, a nicer shirt, but I was still in jeans with my hair straightened. The norm. My comfortable normal.

I took Harry's advice. I took a deep breath and tried not to think about it as I walked onto the stage. Everyone's attention was on me now.

I found Liam in the group of people. He smiled and nodded. I tried to smile back, but I don't really think it worked.

Another deep breath and then the music started,

"Hands touch

Eyes meet

Sudden silence

Sudden heat

Hearts leap in a giddy whirl

He could be that boy

But I'm not that girl

Don't dream

Too far

Don't lose sight of who you are

Don't remember that rush of joy

He could be that boy

But I'm not that girl

Every so often

We long to steal

To the land of what might have been

But that doesn't soften the ache we feel

When reality sets back in

Blithe smile

Lithe limb

She's who winsome

She wins him

Gold hair with a gentle curl

That's the girl he chose

And heaven knows

I'm not that girl

Don't wish

Don't start

Wishing only

Wounds the heart

I wasn't born for the rose and the pearl

There's a girl I know

He loves her so

I'm not that girl,"

I held the mic to my side, shaking heavily. I looked to my Mother's face. A huge smile and a few tears shown in her expression. I looked at Stef, who looked like she could jump up and down. The boys were smiling, but Harry was looking at me like he did when he first saw me before prom. His mouth was slightly open, his eyebrows pushed up, and his eyes were widened. It was as if he'd experienced something life changing.

I smiled at him. He quickly replaced his look of awe with a sweet grin. He started off the clapping. Then Liam joined in, then Stef, and Mom and Dad, and eventually everyone.
