The apartment felt cold and empty, Penelope could definitely feel that something had happened while she was out, normally Diego had some music playing and the whole place felt like home to her but right now, everything felt off and Penelope didn't like it one bit.
Turning on a couple lights and placing the food on the countertop by the sink, Penelope placed her bag down next to the food and continued her way through the apartment. She wanted to call Diego's name out but something inside her was telling her not to. The moment like this felt like one out of a horror film, maybe someone was going to jump out and murder her.
She didn't just jinx it, right?
Penelope shook her head and dismissed the silly thought, the door of Diego's room was slightly open. He probably had never gotten out of bed and that's why the house felt so odd. The closer Penelope got, she could hear someone. It was probably Diego, he was probably playing some video games. Penelope reached the door and as she stood there, ready to open the door, she stopped.
"I'm mad because not even two months ago, you were telling me how much you still loved me and I was telling you how much I still love you! You're playing me like if I'm stupid." Diego spoke with so much hurt that for a second, Penelope felt concerned for him. She had to remind herself that his feelings didn't matter. The only thing she kept repeating in her head was what he had said to the person on the phone "I still love you".
What was he doing with her? If he still loved whoever he was talking to, what was Penelope?
"You slept with him Jess! That's why I'm mad..we've both always said it's you and I baby, just us." Diego confessed, he sat on the edge of his bed with his hands in his hair. Penelope slowly opened the door and at that moment, she felt tears fill her eyes.
Diego looked up at the door, his eyes wide open from shock. He forgot all about Penelope and she obviously had heard everything he had said. Taking the phone off his ear and shoving it into his pocket, he stood up and made his way towards Penelope who slowly made her way backwards.
"I.." Penelope was speechless and she honestly had no idea what to say. What do you say when you hear your boyfriend telling someone else that they still love them? Congratulate them on coming to that realization? Give them a hug because they played you dirty?
Diego walked towards Penelope, he had to tell her that what she heard was all a big misunderstanding. What could possible cover up the fact that he had said he still loved Jess?
"Lupita..what's going on?" Diego whispered. Maybe she hadn't heard anything at all. Maybe he was in the clear. Penelope shook her head and pushed Diego away from her, she needed to get away. Diego was trying to play her like she was stupid, like she hadn't just heard him confess that he still loved someone who wasn't her. Penelope knew at that moment that if she stayed right there and then, she would take him back and believe any lie that came out of his mouth and that was the last thing she was going to let happen.
"I told you from the beginning that I don't play any games D, I can't do this shit." Penelope spoke as she made her way to counter her purse was on top of. Diego quickly made his way over to the counter first and grabbed Penelope's purse, trying to hold it hostage so that she wouldn't walk away right there and then.
"Hey, hey, Lupe, let's talk." Diego reached over to Penelope's shoulder, trying to get her attention so they could talk.
"Let's talk? You want to talk?" Penelope let the words come out her mouth and you could hear the snappyness clear as day. She moved away a strand of hair that was covering her face and crossed her arms. "Okay, let's talk about how we've been together for how long? Two months! You want to go ahead and tell me that this whole time you've still been in love with whoever you were talking to?" Penelope was starting to get upset and it was evident on her face, tears were racing down her face. Diego's guilt was starting to show and he wanted to reach over and hug Penelope, tell her that it was just a misunderstanding. His feelings that were once there for Jess had shown up and he couldn't help it, she was it for him at the time. She was there for him in tough times and those type of feelings wouldn't just go away.
"It was Jess." Diego whispered and Penelope let out a dry laugh. The type of laughing you normally hear from a girl who's done dealing with bullshit. The type of laugh that you hear from a girl who knows her boyfriend is a liar.
"Of course it was, you clearly still have feelings for her." Penelope relaxed and wiped away the tears. "Please give me my purse, I need to head home." Penelope whispered and Diego felt his heart break. He had been through break ups before, Diego normally wouldn't care and the girl would be crying her eyes out. Penelope wasn't doing that, she wasn't crying telling him that she "hated him" and that he was the "worst person ever".
"Don't leave, please. We can sit down in talk. You gotta understand she was someone really important to me." Diego actually begged, he wasn't done talking to Penelope and he wasn't ready to let her walk away. Penelope scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Jeff was someone important to me but if I found out he had slept with someone else, I wouldn't care because I'm with you! I was fully invested in us." Penelope yelled as she paced back and forth.
"I let my guard down for you, all for you to be still in love with your ex." Penelope whispered. Diego placed her purse back on the countertop and slowly made his way towards the black haired beauty. Penelope didn't put up a fight and let Diego hug her, she didn't give in though. As much as she wanted to forget what she heard and forgive Diego, she wasn't about to be stupid. Penelope's wall broke down and she wrapped her arms around Diego who instantly relaxed in her arms.
He didn't know why he had forgotten about Penelope and her feelings. She was amazing and he had let her slip through his fingers. "Let's just get pass this baby, cmon let's eat." Diego said as he let her go and walked towards the bag that held their food. He noticed that Penelope hadn't moved at all, she cleared her throat.
"Listen Diego," Penelope started off and was quickly interrupted by Diego. "No, no. You called me Diego and I already know this is gonna end to shit." Diego was quick to end whatever Penelope was going to say. He wasn't going to let her go, not so easy. "It is though because you still love Jess and you need to figure things out for yourself." Diego shook his head and made his way towards Penelope again, who held her hands out. Stopping Diego from approaching her. She needed to leave, she couldn't stay in the same room as him anymore.
"I'm going home, you need to figure out what you're feeling. We'll talk soon or something Diego." Penelope quickly made her way to the counter and grabbed her purse. "I got your favorite." Penelope whispered as she made her way to the front door.
"Bye Diego."
The door felt heavy and she wanted so badly to walk back inside and take Diego back. Listen to whatever bullshit excused he had about still being in love with Jess but Penelope couldn't do that to herself. Walking out that door was a huge decision that Penelope didn't know if it was good or bad.
She could only hope that Diego would come to his senses and realize how much Penelope had actually liked him.
