"You'll be home right after school?" Dexter asked. "Yes dad I'll be home. Stop worrying." Jay reassured. Dexter shrugged, a mug in his hand.
"I have to leave around eleven o'clock tonight so we can do anything you want." Jay nodded, grabbing the keys out of her dad's hand and walking to the backdoor.
"Love you dad." Jay smiled. "Love you too, Pumpkin."
"Pathetic."
"Please drive safe, I won't be able to sleep tonight if you're in the hospital." Dexter shouted after Jay. Jay turned, "I'll be okay Dad!"
Dexter smiled and nodded as Jay hopped into the truck, pushing the keys into the ignition. Knocking the gear into drive, Jay waved as she sped to school. Dexter waved back, hoping his anxiety would die down sooner or later.
Turning onto the street, Jay let out a sigh as the radio spurted static. She rolled down her window and rested her elbow on the edge, the wind filtering through her chestnut hair.
As she rolled across the bridge, the water seemed calmer today. Still but moving, flowing. Jay took her eyes from the water to the car in front of her as they suddenly braked.
"What the hell.." Jay whispered to herself as she slowly rolled past cop cars surrounding the highway and bridge. A traffic worker directed traffic as Jay tried to glance at what was happening.
"Excuse me do you know what happened?" Jay asked the man in the bright yellow vest. "Body found in the water. Unidentifiable. More information will be released later."
Jay nodded before rolled past the scene and pulled in front of the pharmacy. Hopping out of the truck Jay grabbed her money and stuffed it in her pocket.
Walking into the pharmacy, Jay looked around, walking to the back of the store towards the first aid section.
As Jay turned the corner, Jay spotted Eddie and Richie scanning the isles and talking. "Hey." Jay smiled.
"Oh, hey." Richie responded. Jay stood in front of them, shifting her weight onto her left foot, "I just wanted to say sorry for the other day it was... uncalled for."
Eddie looked at Richie and back to Jay. "No it's totally fine we run into the Bowers gang all the time."
"I wanted to ask you guys if you want to come out to eat after school with me and my friend Matteo?" Jay asked. The two exchanged looks, "Uh it's sounds really fun but the rest of the group isn't here to make an executive decision so we'll have to get back to you on that."
"Okay, if you want to come meet us by the front at the end of the day." Jay nodded. The two nodded as well, walking to the counter with their items in hand.
"Find everything okay?"
Jay jerked her head to her right, her eyes coming in contact with an old man, not Mr. Keene but a stranger.
"N-No I'm fine I can't find anything I'm looking for anyways." Jay stammered, slipping past the man. "Well I can help you if you need help finding something."
"No no really it's okay." Jay reassured walking down the isle and out the door, hopping into her truck and speeding down the street.
Pulling into the parking lot, Jay turned off the ignition and locked the truck, walking to the stairs of the school.
"Hey Teo." Jay smiled upon spotting the small boy. "Hey Jay." He smiled back, walking next to her as his polished shoes clicked against the tile. "So we're still going out to eat tonight right?"
Jay glanced to him and smiled. "Yes of course why wouldn't we. I invited some friends of mine, I feel like you guys would get along." Matteo nodded as he strolled with Jay. "Who are they?" He asked.
"They're a special type of people you know. You have to be a certain way to fit in with them." Jay grimaced. Teo cocked his head confidently, "I guess I'm a special type of person."
Jay nodded, chuckling. "Yes you are Teo."
The two continued down the hallway, the math hallway slowly coming to a close. "Do you know your grade in Pre-Cal?" Jay asked. Teo glanced to her and then a head of him, "Uhm around an A maybe A plus."
"Shit." Jay mumbled, "You can definitely help me with Pre-Cal then. I would kill to have an A in that class." Teo chuckled, nodding, "Yeah, I get it from my dad. He's the Jewish one of the family and also the smartest out of my parents."
"What does your dad do?" Jay asked. "He's a tech in Bangor some building that pays him a lot. I guess being Jewish AND smart is a good combination?"
Jay snickered, as Josiah approached the two from behind. "What's up losers." Jay mutely gasped as she introduced Jo. "Teo this Josiah, Jo this the kid genius himself Matteo." Jo peered around Jay smiling, "Nice to meet you Teo."
Teo smiled shyly, "You too." The three walked through the crowded hell as Teo slowly turned to to the door of his classroom. "I'll meet you out front after school," Teo said over his shoulder. "Okay, see you then Teo." Jay smiled.
"He's too cute." Jo gleamed. Jay nodded, "Yeah he's really anxious around other people though so if he's awkward at first I apologize in advance."
"No it's fine really, I mean we're all little awkward and he's too tiny for me to notice." Jay giggled. "Guess who is unofficially on the road." She asked holding up her keys. Jo's eyes widened as he examined the truck keys. "Damn! I thought you didn't even have your license yet?"
"I don't but my dad knows that I'm a careful driver, I look older than I really am and with all these missing kids the last thing the police department is focused on is some kid driving around recklessly."
Jo shrugged, "True. You need to tell me about your dad at lunch cause I need all the details!" Jay smiled and nodded as Jo jogged down the hallway to his class.
