Her arm shook with anxiety as she pulled the straps of her new dress over her shoulder. It was dark navy color with little flowers covering. It tickled her calves as she swayed, looking at herself in the mirror. "What are you doing." Jay asked as she slumped onto her bed, untying her boots and slipping them on.
She wanted to walk, just incase alcohol calls her name as soon as she gets there, but more to do with the distance. The party was only around the corner.
She quickly rubbed her lipgloss covered lips together as she fixed her hair, fluffing it up before she gave up and grabbed her bag.
"So," Her dad muttered as he leaned against her door frame. "So." Jay chuckled as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"I-I just wanted to say, before you go, that you look great, have fun but if you see ANYTHING going on please, call me, or better yet, come home!" Dexter chuckled nervously.
Jay sighed as she swung her bag over her shoulder and walked towards her father. She wrapped her arms around his neck as her chin rested on his chest. "I know dad I know. I love you."
Dexter forced a smile as he closed rubbed her arm, "I love you more."
"I gotta go, I want to get there fashionably late." Jay swiftly turned down the corner and made it towards the door. "I'll be home around 12." Jay shouted as she closed the door with a thud and hopped down the porch steps.
The sun hid behind the tree line but it's color still remained prominent in the sky, casting a orange red color. The zippers on her boots jingled as she strided down the sidewalk, her bag swinging behind her.
Searching through it she quickly pulled out her pocket knife and keys, just incase. Jay always felt the need to protect herself in any situation. Even though every person she talks to thinks she's scary, she doesn't mind caring around the knife. Makes her feel more important. Empowered even.
It helped with her confidence in her mind. Her confidence had been terrible ever since her mother had died, her dad went sinking back into his black hole and she was just there. She went to school by herself, got ready by herself, tucked herself in at night. It was a routine that's all it was.
As Jay walked along the sidewalk, she felt her shoulders shiver as the cool Maine air brushed again her skin. She thought about seeing Patrick. Seeing him at the party. What was he going to say. She wasn't scared to see him, in fact she was excited. When she walked in the room, she liked the look he gave her. He was protective of her and she appreciated that, in some way.
Jay thought back to the other day, on the phone with Jo. What he had said. About falling for him. Patrick Hockstetter. Was she actually? No she wasn't. But when she remembered back to Bowers house. The little get together they had, she remembered the conversation they had. They hugged. She loved that hug.
Maybe that was the Patrick Jay truly was falling for. The Patrick who was respectful, handsome, a gentleman.
As Jay snapped out of thought, the sound of music could be heard and cars lined along the street. Quickly shuffling across the road, her heart pounded again as she approached the house. The lights in the house were dimmed purple and people spilled out onto the the front lawn.
"Fuck." She whispered as she walked through the crowd of people huddling around the front door.
"Yeah. That's his girlfriend I've heard."
"I don't know why he would want that."
"She's a giant."
