It was a bright morning, one filled with sunshine that just warmed up your heart no matter what you were feeling. Luckily, for Alana Beck, this was her favorite type of morning. She was always cheery when it was sunny, and it often was contagious with the customers, who quite equally loved the sun and its shining.
As Alana opened the small coffee shop on the corner, she smiled hugely. A beautiful Saturday morning was just the way to start her weekend. She loved working there and was all-around a great employee.
She joined her other much less enthusiastic coworker behind the counter as customers began to pile in, wanting a taste of their perfect blend of coffee beans, cream, and sugar (or however they liked their coffee). Alana happily served customers in a blast.
It was maybe an hour after Alana’s shift had started that her eyes met those of a beautiful girl who looked somewhat her age. She noticed the girl was familiar, smiling at her brightly. Alana had seen her in the jazz band concert that Evan, her friend, or acquaintance, more like, had spoken about days after it happened.
Zoe Murphy. That was her name.
Zoe walked up to Alana, who at the moment had no customers to attend to.
“Hey, uh, can I just get a medium iced coffee with cream and sugar?” Zoe asked, getting the usual for herself. She wasn’t one for complicated coffee.
“Of course, Miss,” Alana grinned, nodding, “And your name?”
“Oh, uh, Zoe. Spelled Z-O-E. Somehow they always screw that up.” Zoe chuckled softly. Alana nodded, writing it down.
“Alright, I’ll have your order done in a jiffy!” She exclaimed, grabbing a cup and writing on it in Sharpie. She then waited for it to dry before going to make the coffee. She really was quick to hand it back to Zoe, who was amazed at the speed at which she made it.
“Told you it’d be in a jiffy.” Alana winked playfully. Zoe laughed and tasted it. Perfect to her liking.
“Thanks,” Zoe took a minute to read Alana’s name badge, “Alana.”
“Of course, Zoe spelled Z-O-E.”
Zoe rolled her eyes jokingly and waved before heading off.
Once done with her coffee, Zoe was ready for the day. She was just about to throw away the plastic cup she had been served to hold the coffee in when she noticed something off about how long her name looked on the cup.
“Hey, that isn’t even my-” She paused, realizing what it was.
A ten-digit number with the name, “Alana,” underneath it. Zoe grinned and felt her face go bright red. Alana, the quirky and fun coffee shop worker, gave her her number. She was both surprised and static.
She immediately texted the girl, not wanting to bother her too much at her shift. They had a conversation once Alana had gotten off her shift, and soon even scheduled a little, “get to know each other,” date at the coffee shop Alana worked at, coincidentally.
Both girls couldn’t wait.
