Zoe didn’t think that at the ripe age of 7 years old, she’d sneak out to escape the terrible words that barreled out of her mother and father’s mouths as they fought. Zoe never liked when her parents fought, but she usually just hid out in her room. She’d play some music and play with whatever she felt like.
If it was dolls, she’d pretend that her family was like the perfect family. All plastic dolls that couldn’t fight or yell or say anything, really. She liked the silence of her dolls. It guaranteed that everyone would be happy no matter what. That’s all she wanted from her family.
Sadly, that’s why she ran off in the first place, sneaking to the front door and just… leaving; because her family wasn’t happy no matter what.
It was sunny out, which contrasted her cloudy, blue mood. She simply walked with her head hanging low. It felt odd to walk outside all alone, without her brother or parents to be there. In fact, it almost felt liberating. She felt relaxed in the slightest.
The small bit of relaxation she felt vanished when soon after she left, she heard her house’s front door slam shut as her father, obviously angry, yelled loudly. Her feet took off, hoping that her dad wouldn’t find her. She didn’t stop, escaping the male’s eyesight. Tears pricked her eyes as she ran, not finding the will in herself to not cry.
Zoe let herself sob as she ran blindly down the sidewalk. She tripped and kept going. Luckily, her small jeans stopped her knees from being scratched, but her hands stung a little. Still, her body kept going on and on. Her chest burned, as well as her legs, but stopping now? Impossible.
After a few minutes, she stopped, right in front of a certain Evan Hansen’s house. Evan, who had been watching the leaves of a tree blow around, had seen the smaller girl running, when she suddenly stopped. Evan’s eyes went wide. He got off his bed, which provided the height he needed to see outside of the window, and ran downstairs.
“Mama, I’m going in the front yard!” He yelled, running outside before his mom could even say, “Okay!”
Evan ran out until he stopped in front of Zoe. The girl in front of him was crying. He instantly felt bad, but didn’t know what to say.
“Hi, there. Are you okay, little girl?” He asked. He got no response.
“You look like you need a hug. Can I hug you?” He asked as he put his arms around the girl. The girl immediately put her arms around Evan and cried some more. She put her face in his shoulder.
“I can help. Let’s go inside.” Evan said softly, walking her towards his door. She followed. Anywhere but her house was a home, right now.
Evan brought her inside and sat her on his bed, leaving the room to get her some water. Her face was all red from the running, so he assumed she needed it. He came back with the water and gave it over to her.
“Here.. You look kinda hot. It’s only water, it’ll cool you down.” He said, giving it to her, “What’s your name?”
“It’s Zoe,” Zoe said, voice wavering a little. She took a sip of the water.
“What happened? Did you run away from home?” Evan gasped a little, eyes wide.
“Only to-to walk a little, and then my daddy came out and yelled and I ran…” She closed her eyes and tried breathing slowly to calm down.
