Emily POV
"Would Emily Sterling please come to the principal's office? Emily Sterling to the principal's office." The loudspeaker echoed.

The kids oohed as my name was announced. I knew that I wasn't in trouble, so I was scared. Gotham High School was a quiet school despite all of our craziness, especially with the Waynes' recent murders. I calmly gathered my things and headed to the office.

May, the school secretary, looks at me and says, "Have a seat, dear. Principal Marsh will be with you soon."

I sit down next to this boy who looks like he got beat up. He was holding onto a towel up to his nose. He looked like he had been crying. I scooted next to him and handed him another tissue. He nodded a 'thank you' and wiped his tears. My parents always taught me to be compassionate with others. After what seemed forever, Principal Marsh calls me into his office.

As I walked into the office, there were two detectives in suits. One had a fedora on his head with a beard, and the other was clean-shaven with blonde hair.

"Miss Sterling?" The blonde detective asks.

"Yes?" I respond.

"This is Detective Harvey Bullock, and I'm Detective Jim Gordon. I'm sorry, but we bring horrible news."

I sit down on the chair and look at the detectives with puzzling looks.

Detective Bullock looks into my eyes and says, "I'm sorry to say this, but your parents were killed in a car crash. Again, I'm so sorry to tell you this, sweetheart."

My heart dropped to my stomach and up again to my chest. Are my parents dead? I silently gasp as I slowly take in his words.

"W-W-When did this happen?" I stuttered.

Detective Gordon looks at me and says, "An hour ago. They were on their way to pick you up, and someone swerved into their lane, killing them instantly."

I felt my hot and salty tears falling from my glassy eyes onto the chair. Detective Bullock hands me a tissue and asks,

"Is there another family member you can go and live with? An aunt or uncle?"

I wipe my tears and quietly try to blow my nose. I clear my throat and say,

"I have an Aunt Matilda, but she works with Haly's Circus. It's a traveling circus, but I can try to get in touch with her."

Detective Gordon picks up my backpack and says, "You need to come with us at the station so that we can assess the accident, and you can sign off for the bodies to be taken to the mortuary."

I take some tissues with me, and I walk away with Bullock and Gordon. The last class of the day was letting out, and all the students had their eyes on me. I'm now an orphan, and now the whole school knows. How was I to know that this experience would change my life forever?
