Emily POV
I arrive at the Gotham Police Department with Detectives Gordon and Bullock. The entire car ride consisted of nothing but radio chatter and the detectives talking amongst themselves. Before I knew it, I was in front of the police station. Detective Bullock opened the car door for me. I stepped out and looked at the station. It looked so rundown and shabby. Police officers are running down the stairs and handling criminals.

"Wait here, Ms. Sterling. We'll bring you the paperwork." Detective Bullock tells me.

I sit down on a bench and look at the people passing by me. As I did, thoughts were racing in my head:

What am I going to do? I have one month left of high school then college. I'll be lost without my parents. God, please take me.

As I was staring down at the floor, I saw a pair of feet standing. They were black shoes with grayish pants. I look upwards and see a thin-framed man with a lab coat on. He has jet black hair, thin-framed glasses, a blue polka dot shirt, a zebra-colored tie, and a smirk.

"Hello." He said quickly.

From the looks of it, he talks too fast.

"H-Hi," I squeak.

He sits down next to me and says,

"I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have nobody but come alive with the wind. What am I?"

I look at him as he smiles at me.

"Um.. you're an echo," I reply.

He claps his hands and says,

"Oh, wonderful! Someone who understands me. Okay, let's do another one."

I shift my body to face him. His voice seems to calm me down.

"A woman shoots her husband, then holds him underwater for five minutes. Next, she hangs him. Right after, then they enjoy a lovely dinner. Explain?"

I start thinking and then reply,

"She took a photo of him and developed the picture in her darkroom."

He smiles and says, "I'm Edward Nygma. What's your name?"

My smile diminished as I said,

"Emily Sterling. I came here to sign for my parent's-"

My tears began to fall again. Edward then tries to calm me down.

"Hey, hey. No, tears, please."

He hands me a handkerchief with his initials, embroidered in green. I wiped my tears and said,

"My parents were killed in a car crash today. Their names were Marie and Douglas Sterling."

Edward looked at his papers from his clipboard and said,

"Ah, yes. I'm sorry for your loss. Look, we can deal with these papers later. I don't want to bring you any more grief than you need. Just stay here, and I'll be right back. Just a second, Emily."

Finally, Edward comes back and says,

"Well, it looks like we can't get in contact with your aunt, so Detective Gordon is allowing me to take you home for tonight. I also filled out those signatures that we needed. I know; it's a forgery, but Detective Gordon allowed it since I told him this process is too much for you."

I look skeptical about the situation. I'm glad he could sort out the discharge papers, but me going home with him? Wasn't that against protocols?

"Well, couldn't I just stay at my home?"

Edward smiled sheepishly and said,

"Well, they won't allow that. I'm afraid I'll be your roommate until we can find your aunt."

I gulp loudly and say,

"C-Could I at least get some clothes?"

"That you can do," Edward says to me.

Edward then ushers me outside, where a police car was ready to take Edward and me.

3 Hours Later
After I gathered my clothes, I left with Edward to his house. It was an apartment. It had one of everything. One bed, couch, bathroom, etc.

"As the guest, you can sleep on the bed, and I'll take the couch. I hope you like to take out."

Edward produced two takeout food boxes on the table and turned onto the nightly news. We sat in front of the TV and watched the news.

"Marie and Douglas Sterling were tragically killed today in a car accident that injured three others."

I almost choked on my shrimp. I wasn't aware of the other people that were hurt. I placed down my food and said,

"Ed, if you don't mind, I'd like to go to bed. I have a lot to do in the morning."

Edward looked at me and said,

"Sure. I'll go and run a few errands. I'll see you in the morning."

He grabbed a jacket, and before he left, he looked at me and said,

"With pointed fangs, I sit and wait; with piercing force, I crunch out fate; grabbing victims, proclaiming might; physically joining with a single bite. What am I?"

I smile and say, "A stapler."

He smiles back and says,

"Goodnight, Ms. Sterling."

He closes the front door and locks it. I turn the lamp off, get into my pajamas, and try to fall asleep but cannot. I started to sing a song that my Mom would sing to me for me to fall asleep.

"Lavender's blue, Dilly dilly, Lavender's green. When I am King, Dilly dilly, You shall be Queen. Who told you so, Dilly dilly? Who told you so? T'was my own heart, Dilly dilly,
That told me so. Call up your men,
Dilly dilly, Set them to work. Some to the plow, Dilly dilly, Some to the fork. Some to make hay, Dilly dilly, Some to cut corn. While you and I, Dilly dilly, Keep ourselves warm. Lavender's green, Dilly dilly, Lavender's blue. If you love me, Dilly dilly, I will love you. Let the birds sing, Dilly dilly, Let the lambs play. We shall be safe, Dilly dilly, Out of harm's way. I love to dance, Dilly dilly; I love to sing. When I am Queen, Dilly dilly, You'll be my King. Who told me so, Dilly dilly, Who told me so? I told myself, Dilly dilly, I told me so.
