SCENE 5
Raeni is looking for Christopher at break time. She finds him, with Kwabena, Caspian and Craig.
Raeni: Hi, Christopher.
Christopher turns around to see Raeni.
Christopher: Oh, hi, Raeni! These are my friends! Why don't you say hello, guys?
Kwabena: Why are you talking like that?
Christopher: I don't know!
Caspian: I think Christopher wants to impress his new friend...
Raeni chuckles.
Raeni: He's just a friend. He walked me to Maths today, which was such a blessing, because I like Maths and I didn't want to make a bad impression.
Caspian: Oh, you do Maths?
Raeni: Yes! It's my favourite subject.
Caspian: Mine too! I'm Caspian, by the way. I think we're both in tomorrow's lesson.
Raeni: Pleased to meet you, Caspian. What's your favourite part of Maths?
Caspian: Err... I like algebra.
Raeni: I see. Why don't you tell me the most difficult algebraic formula you know?
Caspian: I can give you Pascal's triangle? Which is (x + y) to the power of n = n sigma k = 0 times the vector (n, k) times x to the power of n - k times y to the power of k.
Craig: If you could understand anything he said, then well done.
Raeni: Impressive. I prefer matrices, though.
Kwabena: What are matrices?
Raeni: They're like vectors, but with four integers instead of two. At the minimum. I think you only do them in Further Maths, though.
Caspian: I looked at a Further Maths past paper. It baffled me so much!
Kwabena: Which is weird, seeing as you got a 9 in Maths.
Raeni: Maybe they just gave you all the Year 13 topics first. It's really not that hard; trust me.
Craig: If it's not that hard, why do you need an 8 to do it?
Raeni: Because you need to be fluent in the theories of mathematics. If you're not, then even basic A Level Maths will seem impossible.
Craig: OK - back to my Drama homework.
He returns to his chair. The bell rings.
Kwabena: OK, I've got History now. You guys staying here?
Craig: I am. This homework won't finish itself.
Caspian: I think I'll just go to the library.
Kwabena: OK. What about you, Christopher?
Christopher: I think I'll just walk Raeni to Physics...
Raeni: Actually, Christopher, I have Chemistry.
Christopher: That's what I meant.
Kwabena smiles and rolls his eyes as they walk off, before making his way to History.
