SCENE 13
Caspian and Raeni are in Maths. The class are silently working on some maths problems. Caspian tries to get Raeni's attention.
Caspian: (whispering) Psst! Hey! Raeni!
Raeni does not notice him. Caspian scrunches up a piece of paper and throws it at her desk.
She picks up the piece of paper and looks in Caspian's direction.
Caspian: (whispering) Calculator?
Raeni: What happened to yours?
Caspian: Solar panel broke.
Raeni sighs. She puts her bag on the desk and opens it.
Raeni: Let me see if I have one spare.
Caspian looks through the rest of the questions on his sheet of paper.
Caspian: (whispering) Actually... I need more than a calculator. I need help!
Raeni: With what?
Caspian: Completing the square!
Raeni: What?
She moves to his desk.
This is easy! What are you having trouble with?
Caspian: Trying to get this one in exact form. Look!
He shows her his working out. Raeni chuckles.
Raeni: How did you get 3.7 +/- square root 8?
Caspian shrugs.
Hold on... I think I did this question the other day.
She opens her Maths folder and scrolls through. Caspian notices a stray pink piece of paper.
Caspian: What's that?
Raeni: What?
Caspian: This!
He pulls it out. Raeni quickly snatches it back.
Raeni: Whoops! You weren't meant to see that.
Caspian: Well, I have. So you may as well tell me.
Raeni: It's... it's nothing. Nothing too serious.
Caspian looks at her suspiciously. He then drops this expression.
Caspian: Alright, then. Whatever you say.
Raeni: By the way, you wouldn't happen to know what lesson Christopher has next period, do you?
Caspian: He has Media, I think. Why?
Raeni: No reason. Don't worry.
Caspian has a thought.
Caspian: Do you like Christopher?
Raeni: As a friend. He's just really... nice. And he's kind of... the first person I met, so... it only makes sense if I stay with him for a bit. Just until I get confortable with the college, and... with everyone.
Caspian: But you don't do Media. Why do you want to meet him there?
Raeni: I wanted to ask him if he had any more sweets. You know... the jelly hearts?
Caspian: Oh, I think I have some left. Here!
He gives her some. She eats one.
Raeni: Thanks.
She takes out a sheet from her folder.
Here's your answer.
Caspian looks at the sheet and copies it.
Caspian: Right, so the answer is either 8 or 0.
Raeni crosses out his answer.
Raeni: In exact form, remember?
Caspian: Oh, right, thanks. So that's... either 4 +/- square root 16.
Raeni: Perfect.
They continue working out more questions.
