SCENE 12

Charli is in the Textiles and Fashion classroom, speaking to the teacher.

Charli: What?! How could you do this?

Teacher: I'm sorry, Charli. But it's the way that things work.

Charli: Then change the way that things work! Zoe is my girl. She's so good at this subject! You can't just drop her like she's, what, a plate!

Teacher: Charli, I know for a fact that Zoe is a very good student. But she doesn't have the necessary qualifications for this course, and that means I have no way of knowing whether or not she's suitable for this course. I apologise.

Charli: But - but - but - but-

Teacher: Charli! Please - just sit down. I need to start the lesson.

Charli goes to sit down, feeling defeated. As the lesson begins, a student turns up late, and sits at the back with Charli.

Charli: Hi. What's your name?

Quinn: Hey - I'm Quinn.

Charli: I haven't seen you around...

Quinn: Yeah, I couldn't come to the enrolment day. But I'm here now.

Charli: What subjects are you doing?

Quinn: I'm doing... Textiles and Fashion, Film Studies and... English.

Charli: Cool, cool.

The teacher hears them talking.

Teacher: Girls! I'm trying to teach!

Quinn stands up to address the teacher.

Teacher: What is it, Quinn?

Quinn: Miss... I'm sorry to say this, but I'd prefer that you wouldn't refer to me as a girl.

Teacher: Why?

Quinn: Because... I don't...

Teacher: Yes?

Quinn: I'd prefer not to disclose my gender. So if you would refer to me by my name instead, that would be great. Thanks.

Teacher: Well, alright, Quinn. Can I get back to the lesson?

Quinn: Yeah, sorry.

The teacher continues to teach the lesson as the class write down notes.

Later, Charli and Quinn are walking in the corridor.

Charli: Did you enjoy the lesson?

Quinn: Yeah. I loved learning about those African textiles. Can't wait to use them in my coursework...

Charli: Me too.

Charli remembers Quinn's conversation with the teacher, and brings this up.

So... you know earlier? When you told the teacher that you didn't wanna disclose your gender? Why was that?

Quinn: Honestly... I don't think you would get it.

Charli: I'm wondering... are you LGBT+, by any chance? Cos I am too. I'm a proud lesbian!

Quinn: Really? I wouldn't have guessed that.

Charli: Yeah, I am a bit of a girly girl, I guess...
