SCENE 3

Christopher is on his way to his Business lesson. He is talking to Kwabena on the phone.

Christopher: So wait - I'm confused; is it whether or weather? I need to know for the next part of the puzzle.

He pauses as Kwabena speaks.

It's not stupid! Whoever wins it gets £100 and a trip to Scunthorpe!

He pauses again as Kwabena speaks.

What do you mean 'who would want that'? I know a lot of people who would, actually.

Suddenly, he is tapped on the back by a girl. He turns around to see who it is. The girl asks him a question.

Raeni: Excuse me, do you know where the Maths department is?

Christopher pauses as he looks at her. She is wearing a casual black dress and is carrying a few books in her hands.

Christopher: Erm, yeah. Maths is that way. I think.

Raeni: Thank you. I asked, like, 3 teachers, and none of them cared to respond. It seems they have a problem being courteous.

Christopher: Yeah.

Raeni: Do you mind walking me to Maths? I don't really know anyone here yet, and I'd rather not get lost.

Christopher: I might be late for Business, though.

Raeni: Oh, no - if you need to go to Business, that's fine!

Christopher: No, it's OK - I'll just be late. Let's go!

They walk in the opposite direction towards the Maths department.

So... what's your name? And what subjects are you doing?

Raeni: My name's Raeni. I'm doing Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

Christopher: Wow... those seem hard.

Raeni: They were the subjects I took at my old school.

Christopher: Where did you go before here?

Raeni: I went to Harris Westminster. I did the test and the interview and I got in, but I left because I didn't like it there.

Christopher: I have friends that nearly went there. What was wrong with it?

Raeni: Well, pretty much everyone was too work-focused. The teachers were too strict, the work was too hard and the students... were just something else. And that's coming from someone who went to a private school for their whole life.

Christopher: So is everyone very posh at Harris?

Raeni: Actually, no. At least, it's not meant to be. Harris is meant for underprivileged kids. My Physics teacher actually lived in Tottenham. But unfortunately, they don't control who applies there - and so we end up with all the rich kids, including me.

Christopher: Oh. So why City and Islington?

Raeni: If I'm honest? Better atmosphere. Better people. Easier to get to. Do I need any more reasons?

Christopher stifles a smile. They reach the Maths classroom.

So I'll see you around some time? Maybe you can introduce me to your friends?

Christopher: Of course; of course.

Raeni: Great. I didn't catch your name, by the way.

Christopher: Christopher.

Raeni: I'll catch you later, Christopher. Bye.

She walks into the Maths classroom. Christopher stands there for a while.

Christopher: Bye...
