Alex and I stood outside in front of a tree. I stared at it as Alex stared at me, "Remember, I'll stop you." I looked at him and nodded before walking up to the tree.
I wanted to apologize to the tree as ridiculous as it sounds. I just didn't want to kill it and I was afraid that's exactly what was about to happen.
I closed my eyes putting my hand onto the tree, I took a deep breath feeling the tree start to decay under my touch. The power and life from the tree flowing through my veins made my eyes glow bright red.
"Thea." Alex whispered but I could barely focus on it. I felt a hand touch my shoulder making me snap my head towards the person, scaring them back slightly. Alex stared at me in shock and slightly in fear from my mutation.
"Althea!" Someone yelled from behind Alex. Charles glared at me making me snap out of it and stand up. My eyes faded back to the normal red and black, "Are you okay?" Alex asked me.
I simply nodded, not wanting to say anything to him.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, mostly directing it to Charles.
"This tree. I used to swing from the branches when I was younger." He said eyeing the tree that was lacking color and life. I stared at it too before placing my hand on it once more to heal it.
The leaves grew back greener than ever, the bark of the trunk hardened, and the tree itself stood straighter. I turned back to face Charles, "Thank you." He spoke with a smile.
"I'm glad to see you training your abilities."
"It takes a lot to do it." I admitted.
"Yes. But soon you will be able to control it and use it with ease." He smiled before walking towards the mansion, "Meet me in the lab in 20 minutes Althea." I watched him walk back inside before turning to Alex who stared at the ground.
"I'm sorry." I finally said to him. He frowned at me, "Why are you apologizing?"
"I- I couldn't stop it."
"You're learning, it's okay. Plus I asked you to do it." He reassured me as he put his hands on my arms.
"Oh and it was pretty awesome I guess." He spoke before making his way into the mansion. I laughed as he turned around, "Coming?"
I ran to catch up with him but parted ways as I made my way to the lab.
Now it was my turn to train, for real this time.
"That's it?" I questioned Hank and Charles who stood on the opposite side of the table from me nodding. We were in the lab that Hank declared as his own.
"We're just starting small." Charles nodded at the pen in front of me.
"But with a pen?"
"Just do it." Hank pushed.
I studied the pen. The weight, length, texture anything and everything about it trying to focus enough to create a forcefield around it. Tingling filled my arms as they rested by my sides, my eyes burned knowing they were turning into a red glow.
Minutes passed and my head began to ache, it wasn't working as usual.
I slouched my shoulders in frustration as I took a deep breath. Charles and Hank looked at me almost like they felt bad for me; like I was a disappointment to the team.
"You're not a disappointment; you're just as important to the team as everyone else." He started reading my mind.
"It's just going to take some time, everyones training is different."
"I'm never going to be able to help. I can't heal anyone without physical contact. I can't destruct anyone without physical contact. And I can't even form a forcefield around a damn pen let alone a person." I fussed. I looked up to Charles letting a tear fall from my eye.
"What makes you think I am as important as everyone else?" I asked.
They stared at me with defeat.
"Because you have faith in me? That you trust me?" I asked slightly mocking Charles. It was too late to stop myself or to take back what I said, it being offensive to him.
"I'm sorry Charles." I whispered.
"It's quite alright Althea. I will never give up on you because I do in fact have faith in you." He smiled a bright smile. I smiled back at him but inside I was tearing myself down, completely broken at the fact that I couldn't do anything right.
I excused myself and headed outside sitting in the grass thinking about anything and everything. I wiped a tear from my face before wiping it on my jeans.
"It would be wise to stop thinking you're going to fail or you will." A voice called out from behind me.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence." I sarcastically laughed at Erik who sat next to me. I continued to stare straight ahead, never looking at him. He didn't speak for a few minutes until the silence started to be overwhelming although his presence did bother me. It seeming slightly familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it.
"Charles is only trying to help." He paused.
"I und-" I began but he interrupted me.
"But in order for him to help you, you have to believe in yourself." He spoke. "Remember what we're here for."
"You're here to learn about your mutation, how to use it and how to control it." He spoke again before getting up and walking back into the mansion. Great talk Erik.
Letting out a sigh I took in his words.
I closed my eyes bringing my hands up to my face then running them through my hair, letting everything escape my mind and focusing on the silence around me.
The property being so large and wide spread, drowned out the sound of the cars passing on the road that was a thousand yards away or so along with the vast number of trees around the mansion making it feel like we're the only ones in the world.
The rustling of the leaves makes me snap my attention to the trees to my left as a breeze blows over making my hair lift off my shoulders and across my face only lightly making my nose itch.
I smiled now that I was relaxed before opening my eyes only to jump in complete shock.
I took a deep breath before running back into the house this time prepared for my training.
"You wouldn't believe what I just did." I said running into the lab that I was just in. Charles and Hank turned towards me, curiosity getting the best of them.
"What?" Hank muttered.
Charles stared in amazement, reading my mind and seeing what I did just moments ago, "Can you show us?" He asked smiling.
I walked further into the room, stopping at the desk I was at, the pen still there.
I stared at the pen letting all the silence in the room relax me before the pen started moving slightly as a red glow formed around it. It only lasted a few seconds but I managed to focus enough to form a forcefield around the pen.
"Now onto something bigger." Charles spoke with a smile on his face. Hank nodded in agreement, "I have an idea."
