Chapter 16; There are lives on the line!

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late update again. I had a trainings weekend from taekwondo, so I was busy with packing and training and all. Vote and comment if you like it and follow me for more stories and update. Sharing this story won't be that bad either.

Dan's P.O.V

*Bang*

I fell on one knee and grabbed to the back of my right shoulder as I yelled out in pain. ‘You should check if your enemy is actually dead.’ I heard. I gritted my teeth to hold back the screaming. I turned my head to face Darren.

‘You’ve put up a good fight boy, but it’s over now.’ Darren said, aiming the barrel to the back of my head.

Suddenly, Julie jumped off the ground and stood in front of me as a shield. Darren’s eyes grew wide in shock as he saw how she protected me. I couldn’t see Julie’s face, but I knew that she had anxiety written all over it.

‘Come on. Do it!’ she said as she looked at the gun that Darren was still holding up. ‘Pull the trigger. Do it! Pull it!’ She kept repeating. 

Darren lowered his gun. ‘Coward!’ Julie yelled and she grabbed his hand, turned 360 degrees forward and planted the tip of her elbow in Carver’s face. She spun around and swept with her leg Darren off his feet. He landed on his back. Julie stood above him and put the barrel between his eyes. She hesitated for a moment and then, 

She lowered the gun and shot him in his legs. Darren started to scream. ‘I won’t kill you. You don’t even deserve that.’ She dragged him to one of the pillars and tied him up against one of them.

She walked away from him and felt exhausted to the ground. I stood up from the ground and ran towards her. I dropped to the ground and wrapped my good arm around her neck. ‘It’s over, Dan!’ She said with tears falling down her face. I pushed her face gently in my neck and hugged her more tightly. ‘The nightmare is over.’ I said. ‘We got him. It’s over.’ I looked up at her and slowly felt how my eyes fell down. I blacked out and the last thing I heard was Julie screaming my name.

Julie’s P.O.V

‘DAN! DAN! Stay with me! Stay awake!’ I said in panic. I was shrugging his shoulders widely, but he wouldn’t wake up. ‘This is a totally different side of you, Julie.’ Darren said smirking. ‘Shut the fuck up! This is your fault!’ I said furious.

I look back at Dan again. His breathing started to slow down. ‘Dan! Don’t you dare to die!’ I said as tears dripped down my face. I didn’t want to see someone I cared about, die in front of my eyes again. I’ve seen many dead bodies, but Dan’s corpse was the last one I wanted to see. He was a person who truly cared about me. 

‘You do have feelings like everyone else.’ Darren said, trying to bring me down. ‘I said, shut the fuck up!’ I yelled furiously at him.

‘Julie!’

I looked up and saw Vince and Mila running towards me. ‘We heard a gunshot out of nowhere. Are you two alright?’ Vince said out of breath. ‘No, Dan is just sleeping on the floor.’ Mila said sarcastically. ‘Of course they are not okay. He is lying there unconscious and Julie is covered in blood and bruises.’ She yelled at him.

‘This is not the time. We got Carver or Darren.’ I said as I looked over at Darren who didn’t even bother to struggle his way out. ‘Just help me to get Dan out of here!’ 

Vince and I brought Dan outside the Dark Hounds hideout. Kaya was there too.

‘Kaya, are you alright?’ I said as I ran towards her. She was sitting on the ground with her hand on her stomach. She groaned as she moved her body, but she looked up to me and smile. ‘I’m fine. Kira didn’t hit any of my organs.’ She said. The smile faded away pretty fast.

‘My father was the previous boss.’ Kaya suddenly told me. ‘What?!’ I exclaimed. ‘He was the one who was the cause of my mother’s death. He was planning to kill me. Darren saved me by killing my father.’

‘But then why is Darren against us and why did he kidnapped those scientists?’ I asked, shocked by the things Kaya told me.

‘Darren was always jealous of me and my mother, but he didn’t hold a grudge against us. He got caught up in my father’s plan and eventually, he thought that my father was right. He had planned to kill every mage with his bare hands and he only would use the technic of those scientists on me so that I could join the Dark Hounds.’ She said with a sad look in her eyes.

‘Damn. Don’t worry about Darren. I didn’t kill him. It would’ve been too easy for him.’ I told Kaya, feeling uncomfortable. I can’t talk about my feelings as well as everyone else.

‘He is going to be executed anyway. He killed a lot of innocent people.’ She said. ‘Is the Magic Council going to take care of him?’ Kaya looked at the ground and said, ‘probably.’

Kaya looked around and laid her eyes on Dan. She gasped. ‘What happened to Dan? Is he okay?’ she asked worried as she started to move, what caused her to groan in pain. ‘Easy,’ I said, laying my hands on her shoulders to stop her from moving. ‘Darren shot him in his shoulder, but he is fine. He just passed out. We are getting him out of here.’ I said. I let go of Kaya and walked back towards the Golden Cave.

‘Where are you going?’ Kaya asked worried. I turned my head and looked over my shoulders. ‘I’m going to save those scientists.’ I said and walked away.

‘Julie, wait! I’m going with you.’ She exclaimed as she tried to get up on her feet. I turned around and raised an eyebrow. ‘Are you insane? You’re wounded. You are staying right here.’ I ordered her.

‘Julie, I’m not letting you alone again. I once made that mistake and it almost cost your life!’ She exclaimed. As she said those words, I placed my left hand on the scar next to my heart.

‘I’ve told you thousand times. We were 11 and it was our first mission alone. You couldn’t have predicted it. Those guys came for out of nowhere.’ I said as I turned my back towards her. ‘You are staying her, if you want it or not. I’m not letting you die like Tyago.’ I said and I walked into the cave.

Tyago’s death has always haunted me until this very day. He was the first person that was my partner on missions. When we were on a mission, he got wounded but refused to rest. As a 9-year-old girl, I couldn’t stop that stubborn teenager. He cared for me and didn’t want me to die. We had to run from a few bad guys and Tyago was too slow, so he sacrificed himself for my sake.

I slapped myself on the cheek. Now is not the time to act all depressed. I have to save those scientists. I needed to think this through, because I was pretty fucked up by Darren.

I slammed my hand on my palm. I got an idea. It was easy. Since Mila looked pretty beaten, I guess that I can only use Nanami for it.

‘Okay, maybe this isn’t going to be as easy as I thought.’ I said to myself as I scratched the back of my head. ‘I really need to get my shit together! There are lives on the line!’ 

I heard a lot of screaming. I sighed. It wouldn’t shock me if Nanami was torturing the Dark Hounds members.

I walked to the cold corridors towards the screaming. The screaming led me through a gym hall that was like the combat gym hall of the Blood Mages. It the middle of the room was Nanami standing alone, shooting members out of her way. As usual she had a smile glued to her face. 

As she was killing the last people in the room, I heard a battle roar coming towards me. I raised my yellow lizard sword and slammed against the guy’s chest, letting him fall to the ground as he gasped for air. ‘Tch, I’m not here for you.’ I said as I walked towards Nanami who was finally done killing the members.

‘What are you doing here? This is my fight!’ She said as she saw the guy that I knocked down. ‘Oh please, shut the fuck up and follow me. We need to free those scientists.’ I said annoyed. ‘You need to learn to have manners when you are talking to people who are skilled and older then you.’ She said pissed. ‘Like I haven’t heard that from you.’ I said as I rolled my eyes. ‘Now stop acting like you’re my mother and come help me with those scientists.’
