One.
Two.
Three...
"Gaghhhh..." There was pain
"Ughh..." My arm was burning
"Pffthaha....Hahaagh." No one cares
"Hmm."
I looked down at the small blade I clenched in my hand then to the puddle of red that formed from the liquid seeping out of my arm.
"Oh no... I'm bleeding."
I dipped my hand in the small pool and marked the bathroom wall.
"What a beautiful masterpiece. Hehe." My laugh was weak as I beheld the bloodstained wall.
"If only they'd appreciate art like this."
Not a second later my phone buzzed and let out intervals of a bell. I slowly got out of the tub and washed my arms. As I gently scrubbed away the red I turned to my alarming phone.
"Time for work already huh."
Once all the blood was washed off I quickly dried it and wrapped my left arm in bandages that I had prepared before. I turned to the bathroom wall.
"I'll have to clean this up later."
I turned to face the mirror above the sink to fix my hair which was in disarray. Dark circles had formed under my eyes to which I applied some concealer but it was still pretty noticeable. I grabbed my keys and backpack, put on my red coat and headed out.
The night sky was fogged up with specks of yellow light from the street lights.
After a few minutes of strolling, I reached my destination. The giant metal gates of U.A. the largest hero academy in Japan. They were intimidating yes, for how could this be a school? More like a prison or that's what it seemed at night.
As I got to the little door on the side (which was made just for me when I needed to get in since it was night and no one would be there this late) I noticed light coming from one of the offices on the third floor. Someone must've forgotten to turn it off.
When I got into the building my eyes were immediately drawn to the trash lying on the floor.
"Kids.'" I hissed.
I walked up the next flight of stairs and turned to a closet. This was the janitor's closet. I gave out a sigh, took off my coat and set down my backpack.
"Time for another long night."
I grabbed my supplies and headed for the top floor. Naturally, I wouldn't want to be all over the place so I would start from the top down.
Washrooms were first on the list.
Now, scrubbing toilets weren't what I had always dreamt of when I was a kid but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Besides, I didn't even have to apply and hand in a resume.
I've been employed as U.A's custodian for the past two weeks. The principle (my employer) has been a friend of mine for a while now and offered me this job. He pays more than I think any school would pay for a janitor but I'm not complaining.
The students? I barely see them since I work after school hours. The teachers? I've seen a few of them mostly when they broke something that needs someone like me to fix it.
As I mopped the halls I heard someone whistling. I turned around to see where it came from but there was nothing. No one. Just the rest of the dark hall. It stopped.
I shrugged. Must be my imagination. I decided to put my headphones on and blast my music so I could stay focussed.
When I got down to the third floor I found the lit up office. My mouth dropped open. Coffee mugs all over the desk and crumpled papers scattered on the floor.
I gave out a big sigh and began cleaning everything up. As I was near finishing I noticed a sack of papers with a sticky note. It reads: "Sort out by grade". Something inside me stirred. I guess I could help whoever forgot to finish this. For the next five minutes, I sat at the desk sorting out the graded papers from lowest to highest.
"Wow... some of these students are really... Not that smart. I feel bad for the teacher."
After finishing the task I swept the now dry hall. Halfway through though I noticed a trail of blood behind me.
"Oh man.."
I checked my arm that I had cut previously.
"You gotta be kidding me."
The whole bandage was soaked in red and smelled like iron. I wiped the trail as quickly as I could.
"I wonder how far this goes."
Following the trail backwards and wiping it off as clean as I could I sensed someone in front of me. I stopped and slowly found black boots before my gaze. I took my headphones off. My head tilted up and my eyes were met with fierce red eyes piercing into my soul.
The stranger's black hair flowed upward from his head and he held tightly onto some kind of scarf.
Who is this guy? A villain? How? I locked the gate when I came in, didn't I?
I stared into his glowing eyes not wavering for a second. I blinked.
"How beautiful." I thought out loud.
"Beautiful...?" The stranger's eyes widened and gave out a small gasp then closed his eyes.
His hair and scarf fell onto his shoulders while framing his scruffy face. When he opened his eyes they were no longer red but black and bloodshot. Dark circles hung under them.
I guess this guy doesn't get much sleep either.
The man cleared his throat. "Sorry, you must be the custodian. I followed the trail of blood and thought some villain broke in."
"Uh... Yeah... You must be a teacher."
He nodded. I watched as his eyes fell on my wrapped up arm. He knelt down.
"Are you hurt?"
Oh, shoot. I looked at my arm and saw blotches of red oozing out. I shot up and held my arm behind my back.
"I-it's nothing I'm fine."
I tried running past him to continue cleaning the blood but was quickly stopped. He had reached for my left arm and held it firmly sending a pulse of pain to my nerves.
"O-ow!"
"You don't seem fine after that reaction."
"I-i'm fine really-"
"Come, I'll fix it for you in the nurse's office.
He began to walk to the nurse's office while pulling me along. So much for "following" him.
When we got to the room he sat me down on one of the beds and pulled out some bandages from the cabinet.
"Give me your arm please."
"U-uhm I appreciate the gesture but I'm fi-"
He took my arm and began unravelling the bandages on my arm.
"H-hey!" I pulled back my arm heart racing.
"What, you don't want to fix it?"
"W-well, I can do it myself so you can go home now."
"I insist." He reached for my arm again and finished unwrapping the rest of the bandages.
When the last of the bandage was off his expression changed from bored to concerned. His eyes grew wide and looked at me questioning what he had just seen.
