Song of the chapter: Habits (Stay High) by Tove Lo
So I thought that Greg was an undercover race car driver and had no idea how he would be able to accelerate so fast but those thoughts and questions were answered once I was a passenger with Maura as the driver.
She swerved corners and ran red lights without a care in the world. She remained in her seat the whole time while everyone in the back struggles to stay in their seat. I topple onto Ashton when we turn right and onto Calum when we turn left. At one point Calum is slammed against the window aggressively and I can't help but laugh.
"Holy shit." Ashton mumbles a bit too loudly and is then slammed against the window.
"I don't like swearing Mr Irwin." Maura tells him off and he whimpers. We pull up to a red light behind a police car and Maura cusses quietly to herself, not knowing that we could hear. We drive slower at this point thankfully so I turn around to talk to Shaye for an update.
"Hey, how is he doing?" I nod to Jak who looks like he is in pain.
"Why do you care?" Bryar fires at me.
"Bryar, leave her alone." Shaye cuts her off before she can do anything else. "He's really warm and he drifts in and out of consciousness." She fills me in. I nod and turn back to Calum and Ashton.
"What's the story?" Calum asks me. I repeat the information that Shaye told me to Calum and Ashton.
"Woah, he was totally fine when we got back." Ashton comments.
"Yeah." Calum adds. "He was laughing and really happy." I shrug my shoulders and focus on the building ahead of us that is the hospital. Light illuminate the accompanied rooms with figures of the healthy visiting the wounded in the dark of the night. We pull up into the parking lot and find a spot near the front entrance.
"Let's go." Maura announces whilst ejecting her seat belt and waits for us. Calum and Ashton help Jak out and semi-carry him to the front entrance with Maura and Bryar leading the way to the receptionist.
The atmosphere inside the hospital is quite eerie. Patients sit in the crowded waiting room for a chance to been cured. Young children wail into their mother's arms as they too wait for their turn.
"Welcome to Midland Regional Hospital, how may I help you?" The lady at the desk greets us.
"Hi. I have a 15 year old boy with me who has been non-stop vomiting and is drifting in and out of consciousness." Maura explains very calmly to her.
"I see, well if you just take a seat and a doctor will be with you as soon as possible." She replies. The cue for a doctor looks like it would take a good hour and we don't know how long before Jak gets worse. The rest of us start to find an unaccompanied group of seats for us but Maura stops us.
"Listen to me, Anna," She reads her name tag and she instantly freezes up. "I don't have the patience to wait around and this boy is getting worse by the second." A few people in the waiting room have decided to listen in on Maura's little outburst.
"I'm sorry ma'am but you're just going to have to wait like everyone else." Her voice is monotone, as if she is forced to say it like it is.
"I'm not-" Maura is cut off by Jak landing on the ground with a thud, falling from Calum and Ashton's arms so swiftly. A few of us gasp along with the receptionist who rushes over to Jak's side.
"Can I get a wheelchair here?!" She shouts to some nurses who have came out of ED. The too rush to Jak and help him into the chair. Bryar and Shaye are both crying hysterically; holding each other for their dear life as Jak is wheeled away into ED. Shaye tries to go after Jak but is pulled back by Ashton.
