Chapter 4- Captains

The last class of the day, PE. I currently hate PE because we haven't got to play soccer yet. And soccer is basically the only thing I live for. Except her, but I don't even know if we're friends. I mean we just know each other it seems. Here we go again.

“Alright morons, today you're gonna play a new sport,” barks our PE coach, Carnes. He's the worst coach ever, but I guess we have to deal with it.

“And that sport is?” asks the short n' sassy Brittany. Can't believe Nathan goes out with her. He's too good for her.

“Shut your yapper and let me finish. It's soccer,” he replies.

“YES!” I exclaim, jumping up. Everyone looks at me and I sink back down, red with embarrassment. But from down the line Alexandra smiles, making me feel better. I can just see her mouth the words 'I love soccer, too.' I remember way back when, when I said I love soccer.

“Now that's over with, this unit's captains are Parsons and Rossi. Hurry up and pick so we can start,” says Carnes. He calls everyone by their last name, so to clarify, Chris and I are captains.

“Ready to dance, 'Prince Charming'?” Chris teases.

“Shut up,” I say. Now I understand Carnes' choice of captains. Chris and I not only have a competitive streak, we both love playing forward. Not only forward though, we usually get center forward. This game is gonna be so much fun.

“I'll let you pick first,” he says.

“Great,” I say. Which it really is. I get to chose the best player other than Chris. I've only seem the kids on the soccer team play, and their really good too.

It takes me all the courage to say it, but I say out loud and clear, “Alexandra.” Not only is she an amazing student, she's the best striker I've seen. I realize that she may be competition, as striker are also offensive, and score goals. Strikers being the primary scoring threat. I have to keep my eye out. Don't want to not be scoring any goals.

I see Chris mouth 'Nice one, Prince Charming', then chose Kyle. Kyle's also a good striker. But not the best. I see Alexandra glare a bit at Kyle. Quite the Alpha Female, Alexandra is. I bet she hates competition as much as I do. We go on we the choosing. My team consists of myself, Alexandra, Nathan, Conor, and Jackson. Turns out the class was split in half, and we only got five on each team. Four teams of five, and two different games. Today is gonna be great.

In the team huddle I realize I have to speak and I have to assign roles. Great. Let's see how this goes.

“Okay team, let's get pumped. Roles, Alexandra, you're striker. Nathan, defender. Conor, play midfielder. That just leaves Jackson and myself. Jackson be goalie for now. If someone wants to switch out in the next game, we'll do that. But for now these are the positions, alright?” I felt in power. I felt like the leader. And my teammates had to rely on me, and I actually wasn't too nervous.

“Awesome! So I'm guessing your forward,” Alexandra asked. Her head was so in the game. I liked it, no, I loved it.

“What else would I be?” I replied. She smiled.

“Okay, Mr. Forward, but don't count on scoring all, if any, goals,” she teased. Ahh... I melted. Why do I love her, but she doesn't love me?

“Sounds so confident, Ms. Striker,” I teased her. I have to say striker fit her, she was striking. But that sounds too cliché.

“Definitely,” she said. Then she went to her position on the field, for the game was about to start. I went to mine, ready to start. I could see Chris arguing with Kyle over something. Uh-oh, this is not good. Teams that aren't in good terms with each other, aren't teams. I could also see Violet trying to drag Kyle away. Figures, Kyle is her boyfriend. Then went to their positions, and it was just what I thought. Kyle was striker. Chris forward. Violet defender. Christian midfielder. Scarlett was goalie. This is exactly what I expected.

Refs called start, and I automatically got the ball. I was too quick for Chris, but Violet is also pretty fast on her feet. She stole the ball from me, only a couple of seconds from when I got into her 'area'. I would've chose her as defender, but it was Chris' turn and I really wanted Conor on my team too. Oh well.

Violet passed the ball to Christian. And Christian to Chris. But they didn't get any farther. Unlike most strikers, Alexandra didn't stay waiting close to the goal waiting for the ball to come close. In fact, she was more like striker/midfielder. She stole the ball from Chris in a blink of an eye, and before I knew it she had already scored.

“Nice one,” I told her as I high-fived her. She ran all the way across the field and haven't even broke a sweat. Impressive.

“I'm just warming up,” she boasted. We both laughed. But I knew in the back of my head that she probably was.

The rest of the game went flawless. Kyle and Chris were still heated from their discussion and couldn't focus. Alexandra and I scored goal after goal after goal. Best day ever.
