:Chapter 7:
I slipped out of bed and left my room. I didn’t normally tell Gretchen my dreams – she never asked to know – but I had to tell her about this one. If there was some possibility it wasn’t just a dream, she would know the truth.
I knocked on her door loudly to wake her up, it was around 3:30 AM. A moment later, she opened the door, sleepy eyes looked at me annoyed.
“What?” she asked, stretching her arms with a yawn.
“Gretchen, you were in my dream again,” I said.
“So what? That doesn’t mean anything,” she shrugged.
I took out the fob watch from my pocket and placed it in her hands. She looked at it for a second, obviously trying to keep a straight face.
“Yes it does,” I replied.
We both sat down on her bed, facing each other. In the silent night, the only light being of the moon shining through the window, showing our faces.
“Gretchen, this might sound completely mad. But please tell me the truth. These dreams, they aren’t just dreams are they?”
She frowned, looking down at her hands. I was almost hoping that they were just dreams, it seemed so much simpler if they were. But deep down, I knew something wasn’t right about my life here.
Gretchen’s deep brown eyes looked up at me and she sighed, shaking her head no.
“You came to me one day and you insisted I do it. You looked so sad, so broken… I couldn’t say no in the end. So I helped you, I helped you become human. One of your hearts disappeared and so did your memories. At least I thought they did, then you started having those dreams. I couldn’t say anything, you told me not to, but now you’ve had one dream too many and I have no choice but to tell you the truth,” she explained miserably.
“This is incredible… A whole life locked away in a watch. It’s almost like magic,” I smiled.
“Artemis didn’t like magic. She firmly believed everything could be explained with science,” she shrugged.
“That sounds like a boring way to see that world.”
We both chuckled a little until silence fell for a moment.
“So what now?” Gretchen asked.
“I think that I have to open the watch,” I sighed.
“But then Jayden won’t exist anymore,” she pointed out.
“I know.”
Over the past two years, Gretchen and I had become best friends as she made sure I settled on Earth just fine. Knowing this friendship was ending right there, sitting on her bed at 4 AM, my eyes became humid with tears and so did hers.
I could have just put the watch away and never touch it again, but something told me in the pit of my stomach that I had to open it, that my life as Jayden was over and it was time for me to leave Earth for something greater. I took Gretchen’s hands in mine.
“I’m so sorry. Goodbye.”
And those were the last words I spoke as Jayden.
I took the watch and this time it opened with ease, a yellow light glowing on the inside. I looked deep into it and suddenly, I was in pain all over.

“Thank you for the last two years, Gretchen. Now I owe you a great favor,” I smiled, standing in front of the telephone booth I knew to be my TARDIS under a street light.
“You don’t owe me anything, Artemis. Just don’t forget to visit every now and then, ok?”
“I promise.”
I pulled her into a hug then took a step back.
“Call work and tell them I’m quitting for me,” I laughed. “Goodbye.”
As she waved, I entered my TARDIS and closed the door behind me. It hadn’t changed one bit. I smiled widely looking around the wide room. I walked down a few steps to the circular controls placed in the middle of a shallow pit in the center of the room. Around the short walls of the pit were comfy green couches. The ceiling was very high, held with green columns that looked twisted and had wind chimes where attached everywhere, making a beautiful sound whenever I would be flying and forgot to remove the breaks – which I did on purpose very often. The walls were aqua blue and there was one huge window showing the outside and on the other side, there was a glass wall, showing an underwater view of the sea of Earth. A shark was currently swimming after a school of fish for a snack. Finally, there were stairs going up to the hall ways of my ship, leading to my bed room, my library, my study, my kitchen, my living room, my pool, etc.
Only in here did I ever really feel at home, I think to myself as I ran my fingers over the controls, trying to think of where to go to next.
