:Chapter 15:

After that, it was clear to the Doctor I couldn’t handle being face to face with Daleks, but anything else was fine. He also took away my guns as if he was taking away my toys. That brought our first fight. In my opinion he had no business taking possession of my belongings as is he was my father. He’s argument was he was scared I’d have another episode of losing myself and not being able to stop myself before I do pull the trigger. I guess after I pointed a gun on him, it was normal that he felt like I shouldn’t have any anymore. But I was still furious after that. He put them away in a room in his TARDIS locked with a wooden made lock and a wooden key he kept on him. Since then, I had the time to cool off, but I missed being able to shoot attackers if needed. It happened multiple times where I would reach my pocket to find it empty in a moment of danger. At least I still had man to man combat on my side, something the Doctor couldn’t take away from me.

But there wasn’t just the lost of guns that has changed since that day. After I started talking to the Doctor again, we were closer – if it was possible to be closer than we already were. Like I opened up to him, he opened up to me in a way I didn’t expect. He told me about this girl, Rose Tyler. He told me how they met and how they grew to be like Joni and me in a way, in love with each other, but never saying anything about it. He told me that now she was safe in a parallel dimension with another Doctor. At least she didn’t die… I asked him if he was jealous of the other Doctor who got to be with her and he said he wasn’t. That he got to spend a fair time with her and that he was happy to think she could spend her life with a Doctor who will age with her. He liked the thought of them together, maybe married with children by now. In the end, I was jealous of the Doctor. He got to give Rose a life she could be happy with. I never got that chance.

“Where to today?” he asked as I walked into his TARDIS, still a little sleepy.

Something told me he already knew where we were going. Maybe it was the inflated duck around his waist or the goggles on his head? I took a moment to try and conceal my laughter.

“I know I look silly. But that’s why I got one for you!” he said cheerfully, throwing me my own inflatable duck. I stared at it in my hands for second.

“You have got to be kidding, right?” I replied.

Unlike him, I had a little dignity and sense of fashion. I didn’t wear the same thing all the time and I definitely was not wearing that.

“Oh come on, Artemis! We’re going to the beach, have a little fun will you! And you won’t be looking ridiculous alone,” he smiled widely.

“I’ll go to the beach and have fun. But I’m not wearing that monstrosity. If you want to wear it, fine for you.”

He walked over closer to me and held up the duck, giving me those wounded puppy dog eyes that were so adorable and impossible to say no to. He stared so intensely at me, I was unable to detach my eyes from him and for a moment, I completely forgot what we were talking about.

“Please wear the ducky, Artemis?” he asked softly.

And without thinking at all, I nodded my head and took the ducky from his hands.

“Great!” he said happily and ran over to his controls. “You better go get changed then.”

How did he get me to wear this ridiculous thing? I will never know. All I knew is that I was red as a tomato was I walked out of his telephone box onto a beach in Quebec, Canada. I was even more confused as to way out of all the beautiful beaches in the word, in the universe to go to, he chose Canada, Earth. And not even in Montreal, one of Canada’s three metropolises, but Saguenay! A place most people have never heard off, so lost deep in the woods.

But after a moment, I understood why we were here. The place was deserted. I checked my watch to see that we were in mid October, making the lack of people completely normal. It was far too cold for a human to go to the beach, but Time Lords were made differently. The Doctor had chosen this place to the peace and quiet we’d have. I suddenly felt a lot less embarrassed about my ducky.

I got over the fact that we were in the middle of nowhere and realized that it was a lovely place. A mixture of freezing October air and the smell of pine trees and lake water filled my nose in a pleasant way. I looked behind us to see a wooden cabin people would go to during the summer to get away from it all. The forest around looked on fire as the leaves had changed to yellow, orange and red.

We took the time to set our towels down and take off our clothes. I was still removing my summer dress when the Doctor in his swimming trunks started running towards that water.

“Last one in is a Dlakin!” he shouted.

“Cheater!” I yelled back because he was already half way there when I started running.

But I was fast and a sore loser. Just a few meters to the water, I caught up and placed my foot in front of him, tripping him and sending him face first into the sand before I ran into the water until it was deep enough to dive. A second after I resurfaced, I was tackled back into the water from behind by a pair of familiar arms that went around me, holding me down in the water. I opened my lips to laugh but all it did was fill my mouth with the lake water and drained me of the little air I had. He finally let go and I stood up, the water arriving mid-chest. I turned around that the Doctor and spit the water right in his face.

“And you call me a cheater?” he laughed, whipping the spit water out of his face.

“Only because you cheated first,” I stuck out my tongue at him childishly.

This made us laugh for a while as it turned into an underwater wrestling contest. I thought I’d be fair and not beat him with my superior fighting skills. Plus a broken nose was already enough. He thought he finally had me when he backed away, holding my purple bikini top in his hands. I looked down to see that I was in fact bare-chested.

“You really think I care, Doctor?” I said, rolling my eyes at him.

When you live 900 years, your own nudity doesn’t really matter anymore, especially with the fact you can just regenerate and change bodies. Plus, I felt perfectly comfortable with the Doctor to not care of he saw me completely naked or not.

“Sorry, sometimes I forget you’re a Time Lady. I’m used to travelling with human girls who freak out if you do something like that,” he laughed as he tossed me back my bikini.

Then something didn’t feel right. The wave were getting bigger as if something underwater was shaking. The Doctor sensed it too, because he fell silent. I placed my feet at the bottom of the water and the whole place was trembling violently. Then my feet couldn’t touch the bottom anymore as the spot we stood in became a whirlpool, like water going down a drain.
