“You ready to go?” I ask
“Yeah”
Nicki and I get out of the car we walk in silence on the green grass we pass headstones and pots in the cemetery until we reach Jayla's plots the headstone reads
'Jayla Nicole Graham sunrise February 20, 2012 sunset February 20, 2012 the quote under it is 'We can only be said to be alive when our hearts are conscious of our treasures let it be forever remembered she was always a diamond to us'
“Happy birthday baby girl” I say placing white lilies on grave site of my daughter
“Happy birthday, sweetie” Nicki places the teddy bear beside my flowers
“We love you so such”
“There isn't a day that we don't think about”
“If you were still with us today I would be planning your first birthday party it would be princess themed I know you would love it” Nicki says
I place my arm on top of her shoulder I bring her close to me “It's okay to cry”
“I know but I'm tired of crying”
“Me too” I say
“I'm ready to go”
“Okay, let's go”
We get in the car the drive is quiet
“Do you think if I--”
I cut her off “You can't keep doing that to yourself you know Jayla's death wasn't your fault”
“I can't help but feel like it is”
“There was nothing you could have done” I say wiping away Nicki's tears
I start thinking about to that day
Flashback (Start)
Nicki and I cuddle up on the couch watching some sappy movie
I get up off the couch
“Where are you going?” she asks
“To get some more popcorn do you want something?”
“No, I'm fine” she says
“Are you sure, I can't have my girls unhappy” I say rubbing Nicki's nine month pregnant stomach
“I'm fine but it seems that your daughter is craving pickles”
“Just pickles?” I ask
“And mayo”
“You want pickles and mayo?” I ask
“No, your daughter wants pickles and mayo” she says laughing
