Liza squeezed Ed's hand tightly as the nurse told her to take deep breaths. Doctors and nurses were rushing all around the cramped room and Ed was definitely overwhelmed and a bit nervous. Suddenly the nurse beside Liza moved towards the end of the bed.
"Sweetheart I'm going to need you to start pushing. Make sure you-"
Liza let out a scream as her hand managed to become even tighter around Ed's. The world around Ed began to loose sound. He almost seemed to drift in and out of consciousness even though he was fully awake.
"I'm right here Love." He whispered, gripping Liza's hand tightly.
Finally, after four long hours, Ed snapped out of his trance-like state of shock as he heard the cry of a baby...his baby. Liza sobbed happily as Ed stood slowly. He took off the face mask he was given and discarded it to the floor. He walked over to where his little girl was being washed off by the doctor, who was smiling brightly. The doctor put a diaper on the baby and wrapped her in a blanket after gently cutting off the chord that connected her to her mother. The thing that supplied her life so far. The doctor gently picked up the baby, who was silent. He turned around to face Ed and looked him in the eyes,
"Would you like to hold her?"
Ed slowly nodded his head, slightly holding out his arms. The doctor placed the baby into Ed's arms. Ed couldn't help but let a smile spread across his face as a single tear fell down his cheek.
"Hey beautiful girl." Ed whispered, walking back over to his wife's bedside.
Still holding the baby, he smiled at Liza who reached up to wipe away his tears. Liza held out her arms as Ed carefully handed the baby over. After a minute of admiring her baby, Liza's smile suddenly disappeared.
"Is something wrong?" Ed asked.
"Name her after me Ed." Liza whispered.
"What?" Ed was confused and his face was suddenly strewn with worry.
"I said name her after me." Liza said harshly.
"Liza you're being crazy." Ed began, his voice cracking. "Liza then we'll have two Elizabeths in the house."
"Ed.." Liza paused to compose herself. "Ed...you know...deep down...that I wasn't gonna make it home. I could see it in the way you've looked at me recently. You knew I wasn't sick from the baby. You knew my headaches weren't from morning sickness. You knew Ed."
"Love," Ed whispered, tearing up, placing his hand gently on the side of Liza's face.
"Just..." Liza sighed. "Just name her after me okay?"
"Okay." Ed's voice was barely a whisper.
"Mr. Sheeran?" The doctors voice boomed through the room.
Ed stood and glanced in the doctor's direction.
"May I see you outside please?"
Ed followed the doctor out into the hallway where a familiar face greeted him.
"Hey Ed." Doctor Gallifrey spoke sadly.
"Hey." Ed shoved his hands in his pockets.
The doctor was fidgeting nervously with his clipboard, which he held close to his chest.
"I have some...news." The doctor stated nervously.
"Okay well then say it then." Ed stated nonchalantly.
"Well," Doctor Gallifrey began, "it's not exactly news you would...um...like."
Ed shoved his hands even deeper into his pockets and balled his hands into fists in an effort to stay calm.
"Well Ed...there's um." Doctor Gallifrey dropped his clipboard to his side and scratched his head with his free hand.
"I'm really bad at breaking this kind of news I'm sorry." He laughed nervously.
I'm really bad at breaking this kind of news? How bad. Oh God how bad.
"Ed," The Doctor began, "your wife she...her tumor has slowly been getting bigger over the course of the last few months. It's gotten so big that there's actual, visible swelling on the outside of her head. We also did a few scans and...we presume Elizabeth has been taking up to eight painkillers a day. If she's tired that's why. She must be in a lot of pain."
Ed released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding slowly as he prepared to ask the next question,
"How-" he took a shaky breath and decided to restate, "What does that mean exactly, Gallifrey?"
Doctor Gallifrey continued, taking in his own shaky breath. Both parties were doing their best to keep it together.
"It means......It means I expect the tumor to reach critical functioning parts of the brain as late as Wednesday."
Wednesday. It was Monday. What does he mean? What happens if the tumor reaches-....oh. Ed thought.
"What does that mean Doctor?" Ed whispered.
Doctor Gallifrey took a step closer to Ed and gently placed a hand on the ginger man's shoulder.
"By crucial functioning parts I mean...I mean the parts of her brain that tell her lungs to breathe, her heart to beat, her muscles to move....that's what I mean."
Oh.
"Could you-" Ed began, his voice faltering. "Could you elaborate please?"
Ed knew full well what the doctor would say. Maybe he was just holding on to the last bit of hope he had for his family.
"Ed," Doctor Gallifrey whispered sympathetically, "Ed Elizabeth's cancer is incurable. She doesn't have much time left."
Ed was trying to remain calm and collected, but his voice broke more with every word he spoke.
"How long does she have?" His voice came out as barely a whisper.
Doctor Gallifrey released Ed's shoulder and hung his head.
"She doesn't even have a week Ed. You can take her home today."
It felt as if a knife was being stabbed and twisted into Ed's heart. He fell to the ground. It was as if the world around him was nonexistent. He was trapped in a world of darkness and death and he was all alone.
I'm going to loose her.
I'm going to loose my wife...my everything.
I'm going to loose Liza.Yooooo. It's me. I'm not gonna say anything besides just comment. Comment how pissed you are and how you want to rip my head off. Adios.
