"You ready?" Ed asked.
"Yeah....yeah I am." She replied with a light smile.
Ed looked her over...her brown wavy hair...her green eyes....her olive skin.
Ed's eyes welled up.
"Hey..." She said sweetly, wiping his eyes. "What's up?"
"It's just-" Ed began, "You look just like her. You're really growing up."
"Awww Dad." Elizabeth gushed. "Come on let's go." She said, walking out the door.Ed parked the car in the field, allowing Elizabeth to get out of the car. She opened Ed's door for him and helped him out of the car. She smiled up at him, even though they were almost the same height by now.
She definitely didn't get her size from her mother. Ed thought.
Suddenly, Elizabeth felt strong arms wrap around her waist. She squealed as Chase picked her up off the ground and spun her.
"Hey babe!" Elizabeth smiled.
"Hey." Chase said, placing a soft kiss on her cheek.
Ed smiled at them. They reminded him of well...himself and Liza. Chase was a good guy and a musician like himself. He was on the football team at Liza's high school. He was seventeen. Liza was sixteen.
Where has all the time gone?
Ed walked close to the two of them as they made their way to the front of the crowd close to the stage.
After a few minutes of chatting with the people around him, Ed turned his attention to the stage as Liza's parents walked on.
Derek Myers tapped on the microphone and it responded with a loud squeal. He cleared his throat and began to speak,
"Hey everyone. Wow." He scanned the large crowd of people and smiled when he laid eyes on his son in law and granddaughter. "Elizabeth would've loved this. All these people gathered here just for her. I bet she's looking down on us right now." He paused to take a breath.
"I know Elizabeth wasn't one for me being sappy so...I apologize in advance because this speech will be just that."
There were a few giggles from deep in the crowd.
"I also want to apologize in advance because this speech will be woefully inadequate in capturing the beautiful, feisty, talented, amazing young woman that is my daughter. But we're not here to reflect on what could have been. We're here to remember Elizabeth's...well short lived life...that touched so many people.
Liza was born in June of 1992. I remember it very clearly. I remember thinking, when I first saw her, that she was going to make a big impact on people in her time here. And she did just that. The first few years of her life seemed to fly by as she learned to walk and say her first word, 'open'. She opened our lives up to so much more than we could've ever dreamed. When she grew a bit older, she fell in love with a handsome young ginger musician. She showed us her dedication and loyalty throughout the relationship before getting engaged and later married to hat same man. Now, before I continue, I would like to thank you, Ed," he made eye contact with him, "for making Elizabeth's life amazing and pure. She loved you so much...and I know you love her. Later Elizabeth found out she had cancer. I found out about the news later, and I'm not gonna lie, I was devastated. Throughout her life, she touched all of you...she fought her battle with her illness. She lost. But we are here today to celebrate Elizabeth Marie Myers for her accomplishments and for her joy that kept us going....." Mr. Myers smiled.
"Let's begin!"
The crowd cheered and dispersed as they ran to the memorial.
Ed felt as if there was no sound...as if the world stopped moving. He looked around at the hundreds of people. They were all there for her. She had left this big a mark on the world. Ed snapped out of his trance as he looked at his daughter. His daughter that was practically a mirror image of her beautiful mother...just a bit taller. A tear fell down his cheek as he smiled at her.
Ed walked the opposite direction of the crowd to the graveyard. He knelt down beside Liza's grave, which was currently decorated with streamers, flowers, stuffed animals, and much more.
"Hey baby." Ed whispered, putting his hand on the tombstone.
"Do you see all of them?" He asked, motioning towards the crowd.
"They're all here for you." He paused. "Our daughter looks just like you. It's like God wanted to give me a sweet reminder of you. You did it baby. You left your mark on the world. They all love you. I love you." He paused. "I'll see you again someday, Liza."
Suddenly a white dove flew in and gracefully landed on top of Liza's grave. It seemed to look up at Ed before flying away into the distance. It was the last bit of closure Ed needed. He stood and walked out of the graveyard. He played Liza's voice in his head,
I love you too Teddy.Yooooo. That's it! The books done! I hope you liked it...I felt like these last two chapters were kinda shit but oh well. Be sure to check out my next book.
