The paramedics rushed the stretcher out the front door and towards the ambulance, lights flashing, sirens blaring, people yelling orders. Ed trailed close behind trying to will the tears away, biting his fingernail. The other members of the emergency service crew helped the paramedics load Liza's motionless body into they back of the ambulance, motioning for Ed to join his wife. Ed walked up the ramp into the back of the car and held Liza's lifeless hand in both of his. Ed let his head hang as he cried silently.
The next hours passed in a blur. Pacing the waiting room. Holding back tears. Watching people come and go...until people stopped coming. Ed sat in a chair, head resting in his hands, in the middle of the waiting room...alone. It was just past four in the morning when the doctor walked slowly towards Ed.
"Mr. Sheeran..." the doctor began.
Ed looked up at him and went pale. The doctor's face was red and his eyes were watering. The doctor took a deep breath.
"Mr. Sheeran...if you would....um step into my office." He said quietly, not making eye contact.
Ed swallowed hard and stood from his chair. The doctor, whose name is Tom Gallifrey, escorted Ed to a room left of the waiting room and ushered him inside. Doctor Gallifrey sat down at his desk and Ed did the same across from him.
"Mr. Sheeran-" Ed cut the doctor off,
"Ed is fine Doctor."
The doctor continued, "Ed, um..."
Doctor Gallifrey paused and put his head in his hands.
"I'm sorry Ed, I'm not sure where to begin."
Ed held his breath. His heart was beating out of his chest. A million thoughts raced through his mind and he couldn't help but think the worst.
"Mr. Sheeran...um Ed, sorry. To start off I just want to clarify that your wife is alive."
Ed breathed a sigh of relief. At least it couldn't possibly be worse.
"Ed...." the doctor began, "are you aware your wife is four weeks pregnant?"
Four weeks. Wow. Ed thought.
"Erm, yes. Yes Elizabeth just told me today actually."
Doctor Gallifrey continued, "Okay, um..." he paused. "Well you're aware, Mr. Sheeran, of the papers we had you sign upon arrival, correct?"
Ed reminisced on the sights and sounds around him when he arrived. Liza was rushed away from him to an operation room. Ed remembered a nurse shoving papers and a pen in his face...what did she say? Ed thought harder...
"Mr. Sheeran! Mr. Sheeran! We need you to sign these papers confirming your approval allowing us to operate emergency surgery on your wife!"
Oh.
It was all a blur. Ed didn't know what the nurse said. He felt a sort of out of body experience upon arriving at the hospital. It was as if none of this was happening. None of it was real. He had signed the paper in a daze, his hand guiding the pen across the paper in the familiar pattern of his own signature that he had done so many times.
The doctor whispered, "Ed? Are you with me?"
Ed snapped out of his daze.
"Yes...yes I'm with you. Yes I remember the papers." He said quickly.
Doctor Gallifrey spoke, "Have you been made aware as to why your wife needed to be operated on?"
Ed paused to think, "No..."
His heart began to pound again. He broke out in a cold sweat and his anxiety shot through the roof.
The doctor took in a deep breath and sighed,
"Mr. Sheeran...I'm very sad to inform you that..."
Ed cupped his hands to his mouth in anticipation.
"Ed...your wife...she...we..." Doctor Gallifrey took a minute to compose himself.
"Ed, we needed to perform emergency surgery on Elizabeth because...on the ambulance ride here, the paramedics discovered a tumor. And...upon arrival they discovered it was cancerous. I'm sorry."
Ed's world went black. All he heard was ringing. All he felt was loss. All he saw was Liza. Seeing her for the first time at a bar in Times Square. Kissing her for the first time outside a hotel suite. Sleeping in the same bed on the night he met her. Coming up with her nickname. Dancing barefoot on the grass on the first official date. Kissing her again and again. Seeing her smiling face every day. Proposing to her. Marrying her. Loving her.
Suddenly Ed hung his head and cried. For ten minuets he just sat there...crying, until he finally asked, "How long?"
Doctor Gallifrey looked puzzled, "I'm sorry I don't-"
Ed cut him off and looked up at him, "How long does my wife have to live?" He choked out.
The doctor sighed, "Eight months maximum. I'm so sorry."
Ed's jaw dropped as tears fell quickly down his face. He jumped up out of his seat, turned, and ran out of the room.
"Mr. Sheeran! Sir! Sir!" The doctor shouted, running after Ed.
A nurse stopped him before he caught up.
"Give him some time alone Doctor." She said sincerely.
Ed burst through the front doors of the hospital and ran out to the middle of the parking lot in the pouring rain. He crumbled to his knees and hung his head in his hands, sobbing. Sitting there in the pouring rain Ed realized, for the first time, that he might loose the person he loved more than life itself.Yo. So don't hate me for these chapters haha but um yeah.
