The nurse applied a cold, smooth jelly to Liza's stomach. Liza flinched, "That's cold!" She laughed.
Ed was standing to Liza's right, biting his nail nervously. Liza glanced over at him and smiled. She loved how much he cared about this. Liza held her hand out to Ed. After a moment, he stepped towards her, kneeled beside the bed, and held it. The nurse grabbed the transducer, a plastic and metal stick meant to send sound waves through Liza's stomach, and gently began to rub back and fourth on Liza's stomach. Suddenly a black and white picture appeared on the screen: their baby. Liza smiled widely as she squeezed Ed's hand.
"So...?" Liza asked the nurse, hinting that she couldn't wait to find out what gender her baby was.
The nurse looked back and forth between Ed and Liza before announcing cheerfully,
"It's a girl!"
Liza smiled at Ed, about to deflect the 'I-told-you-so' only to realize that Ed was wiping away a single tear.
"Awww baby." Liza laughed, endearingly.
"I knew it." Ed whispered.

Ed sat across from Liza, who was sleeping on their couch in the living room. He looked her over and stared at her face. His mind began to wander. He noticed the bags under her eyes were larger and darker, but she had been sleeping plenty. Her skin was slightly paler than it used to be. Her eyes seemed cloudy. Liza lost her focus a lot lately. Dark thoughts clouded Ed's mind and he couldn't help but let a little hope slip away. She was getting frequent headaches.
No.
Ed shook his head. He knew she would get through this. It was just the pregnancy adding to it that was making things so hard for her. She would be okay. Anyways, the baby won't be a problem soon enough. It was exactly one month away from the due date today. Ed smiled to himself. He couldn't wait to start a family with Liza.
It's just a bump in the road. He thought.
She'll make it through this. I know she will.
