Chapter Two

Ky P.O.V.

All lunch Nicole sat with us, and she was sneaking glances at me while I was doing the same. There was something tingling about her. She was hilarious and it was a kind act that she did for Marcus.

Although, I didn't really like how she just showed up and thought that she could just immediately sit with me and my friends. We're at the top, and currently, she is at the bottom. We are now sitting in our last class, and I kept sneaking glances at the clock.

We had five minutes left until I could finally focus on basketball. "Well we have a new student, Nicole, so why don't we invite her up to share a little about herself as a finish to our first day." My Physics teacher, Mrs. Bernard, told us.

Everybody clapped as Nicole walked to the front of the class a little nervous. "Um well where do I start?" Nicole asked Mrs. Bernard with a shaky laugh. "Well let's start with where you are from." Mrs. Bernard told her with a friendly smile. And with that Nicole faced the front.

"I moved here from California, I had lived in a city called San Marcos. I have two siblings, a brother and a sister. I have three best friends. That sums up my California life, I am honestly a big bore." She chuckled again nervously, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

I coughed up a laugh, "You can say that again", I mumbled between my hacks. She kept shifting from one foot to the other, but she spoke loudly and with confidence, ignoring my insult. I was bitten at how she easily passed on everybody's laughter at her, for most teenage girls can't.

Just as she was about to say something else, the bell rang and the class poured out into the hallway. Finally, school was over. I met up with Matt and Travis as we made our way to the boys locker room.

We walked in the gym all at the same time and immediately the whole teams' eyes were on me, including the four newbies who are trying out with eager and hungry eyes.

I was captain of the team because my family is friends with the coach, and I am the best on the team. Our coach is 6'4 and he has a short buzz cut on his black hair. He's a good influence for these boys and an even better leader for this team.

"Alright let's get this day over and done with! Everybody pick up a helmet!" Coach yells at us. The reason we wear helmets is so that when we go against someone, we can pass judgement based on their ability.

Knowing someones identity makes it easier to pass a quick judgement based on their character that we may know. This tactic creates a better team from the start up. I line up with my assigned team which consists of a few new juniors and seniors, Travis, and Matt.

"Alright somebody needs to go up against Ky!" Coach yells at the other side. That second, somebody walks up in front of me from the other side. They sort of have a feminine body, but you can't really tell under the jersey.

"You sure you really want to do this?" I asked the person. They didn't say anything back while simply squatting down. I eventually just shrugged it off and squat down too. That's what really annoys me about the helmets, you can't see who the other person is.

Coach blew his whistle and threw the ball up in the air, but before I could get it the person hit it towards their team and Marcus caught it. My nerves were already bitten due to this damned first day in school, basketball is just going to make everything worse.

"Marcus, run!" Yelled the whole other team. Marcus suddenly realized what was going on and he started running with the ball to the other side, but before he could even pass me, I blocked him and he ran straight into me and fell to the floor.

The whole team started laughing except for our hard up coach. As much as it was funny, Marcus had actually been my friend in many situations, especially when I feel down with certain classes that I don't understand. I grabbed his arm and hoisted his skinny bones up. I nodded at him in assurance as he repeated.

"Alright everybody just shut up and go back to your side!" I yelled at the team. They all returned to their sides and the same person took their spot in front of me. Coach threw the ball and this time I was able to hit the ball to my side where one of the unfamiliar kids caught it.

As when he tried to pass it to Matt, the person that was against me caught it midair and passed it to Marcus where he threw it into the hoop and made a point.

Coach blew his whistle and we all went back to our sides. But instead of the same person being against me, it was my friend Tyson. He is African American at almost 6'3 and is a good damn basketball player.

Tyson got the ball and hit it to this strange person with hidden talents. I tried to block, but they double crossed me. Luckily I knew where they were going and followed hot on their heels, but then they double crossed me again and threw it into the hoop with a cocky swoosh.

Both my team and I were astonished by what just happened. We just stood there with our mouths hanging open. It was rare when someone double crossed me, or even made a hoop against me.

"Alright that's all for today. I will contact you or your parents if you made it on the team." Coach yelled as he wrote something down on his clipboard in pure concentration. "Hit the showers!"

I walked up to the person that double crossed me and I took off my helmet. I stepped up to them so that I was blocking their path. "Who do you think you are to come in here and act like your better then everybody!?" I yelled at them, feeling eyes on us.

To my astonishment, they just walked past me while checking my shoulder. I quickly grabbed their wrist and let go of it in the same second causing them to fall to the ground as their helmet fell off. Long straight brown hair fell down over their shoulders in a clumped up ponytail that was once a bun.

I couldn't believe that the new kid beat me at my own sport. I can't believe a girl beat me.
