'Knee Deep' by The Zac Brown Band (featuring Jimmy Buffet)
Chapter Thirteen
All throughout the day, the football team has given me stares like they want to rip me apart. I dare them to even try. I may not agree with Ky's past affairs, but I think this football team has a big storm coming their way.
Speaking of Ky, he has stuck by my side practically all day, and now I think my face is permanently bright red. Not by embarrassment, but anger. I felt frustrated by him on how he continuously treated me like someone completely defenseless.
As soon as I got home, I belly flopped on my bed and fell asleep with Skylar cuddled up in my arms. Now I can't get up because if I do, that means I'm going to have to do my homework. I sucked up the fact and contracted my numb arm out from under my chubby Golden.
I pulled out my computer and decided to Skype Hannah and Rachel. Rachel picked up on the first ring, and I added Hannah in which she picked up after a few more rings. "Nicole!" They screamed in a high pitch girly voice. I chuckled and my breath got hitched in my throat.
I didn't realize how much I would miss them until now. It's hard to only hear their voices once or twice a week instead of my whole day. "I miss you guys." I sobbed out as I traced the outline of my computer screen. "We miss you too." They said harmonized.
"So how was your day?" Hannah asked with her entire interest poured in. "I need your guy's opinion on something..." I tried to ask them without triggering any concern, but I failed. Hannah immediately noticed and put her face straight up to the camera.
"Sure, shoot." Rachel said, uninterested, while painting her nails. "I joined a boys basketball team because they didn't have a girls." I sped up the words hoping that it would cause them to process it a little slower.
I looked away from my computer as I could feel all their shouting coming on at once. I sat in silence for a few seconds until Hannah finally spoke up with uncertainty. "Are they treating you fairly. Not like some girl, but a team member?" She asked.
"Yea, no, I don't know. They treat me like a girl, yet a team member at the same time." I mumbled and began fiddling with my hands. "As long as you feel happy with them, then we are okay with it." Hannah stated with a wide smile, and Rachel hummed in agreement.
Sometimes it feels like I am only talking to Hannah and Rachel is in the background just so she doesn't feel excluded.
"We might be traveling to California though to play a game since it's like Nationals or whatever, but that's only if we make it." I explained and I saw how their eyes immediately lit up. "But I don't know how to explain it to my parents..." I trailed off hoping that they would catch on.
"Well of course!" Hannah yelled as if I knew what she is thinking. "Just say that you are visiting us." She shrugged at the simple explanation. "What if your parents ask questions, or like my parents text yours?" My mouth spilled all of my concerns out at once.
"Where would you be staying?" Rachel asked as she began filing down her cat-like nails. "The tournament is right in Escondido I think, or somewhere in San Diego suburbs." I said with hope in my tone, but another thought immediately shot down it all with one swift motion.
"I might not even get to go if the rules in Nationals don't allow any gender mixing what-so-ever. The whole thing seems to just be blowing up in my face now that I look at it." I mumbled as my voice dropped with a hint of sadness. Rachel noticed and kept to herself, but Hannah was too focused on solving my problem that I could barely reach her registering mind.
