Chapter Five
Nicole's P.O.V.
The sound of my music is the first thing that fills my ears as I wake up to the song "Done" by the Band Perry. I got up and took a shower while I heard my brother grumbling something in the back ground. I got out and put on a Black obey tank top with light blue pants.
I grab my black vans and started walking down the hallway where I greet Emma as she begins meowing and rubbing my leg. I bent down and petted her, but before I can get up, Skylar and Camryn jump on me and start licking my face.
Emma hisses and runs off. "Alright, alright. I am going to be late." I laughed and managed to shove them off. I snatched an Oreo pop-tart from the pantry and held it in my mouth as I slung several bags over both shoulders.
I grab a bunch of apples and carrots from our fridge and stuff them in my bag as the entire Sullivan family scrambles around the kitchen. "Good morning! I love you, and I gotta go." I kissed my mom on the cheek and she hummed in a surprise.
She must be stunned to see me excited and awake for once in the morning before school.
I packed everything up and walked out to the street where my truck sleeps. I throw my bag in the backseat and start up my truck while searching through stations on XM. I blasted my ears with The Offspring as I pulled off the curb.
For about fifteen minutes, I flipped through music while chewing down on the breakfast of champions I had taken along with me. I pulled up to the stables and grabbed my bag full of apples and carrots. I rushed out of my truck while almost dropping my armful of treats and keys.
I found her stall with a beating heart and quickly opened it to find it empty. I ran out to the field and hopped the fence while I gave three deafening whistles. I waited till I saw a painted Arabian sprinting, full speed, at me.
My heart picked up as I saw her and it was as though time slowed down. I couldn't help the grin that spread across my cheeks as I jump off the fence, and together, we skid to a perfect spot to meet one another in the middle.
I gather her head in my arms as I can feel her heavy breaths go down my chest. I wanted to spend my entire day here with her, but I knew my time is limited. Sooner or later, I have to make my way to school and dread seeing Ky.
"Of course, I shouldn't be worrying about anything but you while I'm here." I whispered to just her while scratching that special spot on her chin. "Freedom, look what I brought." I sang as I pulled my bag through the fence.
She sticks her head in my bag which tickles me, so I laugh and pull the bag away from her. "Be patient." I say while jumping upon her back in which she has stuck out largely to help me. I kick her sides gently and she takes off.
My mother and I have found a love for the Arabian energy as they can always take off in a moments notice. With that said, Freedom proves us right as she gallops across the field towards a pond were we came to a gradual stop.
I slid off her back and pick an apple out of my bag and fed it to her, but not before taking a bite of it myself. I suddenly felt my phone buzzing in my pocket and realized our time limit has been cut. I hop back on Freedom and rush her back to the stables at a slow pace this time.
As we approach the fence, I slow her down and I can feel her stalling our goodbye. I open the gate and snatch her halter off of a post. I latch it across her head and give her a reassuring pat on the comfort shoulder. I put her back in her stall and feed her another apple.
I kiss her muzzle and she licks me back on the cheek as I giggle to her fondness. I walk out, and she starts to follow me, but then I shut the gate and opened the top half so she can stick her head out. I walk out of the stables with slow feet only to hear her crying which breaks my heart.
I ran back to my truck and climbed in to start the engine and head to school. I changed my shirt on the way and sprayed some perfume in hopes of getting rid of any stables reminiscent. I managed to change my shorts into pants at a long stoplight.
Now that was a true struggle.
On my way, I got a call from Rachel in which I couldn't help but answer. Even if it delays my rush to school. "Hey is you cat okay, because that is the only thing I care about!" Wow, nice of her to ask of me. I just laugh it off nervously. "Yeah she misses you."
"I'm just kidding, how are you? I talked to Hannah and she says she talked to you, why didn't you invite me to the call!" She yells the last part. Rachel and I have always had shaking ground between us. She is bossy and I am not the type to take orders or follow in someone's shadow.
"I would of, but you probably would have either been out with some guy or on your computer." We both laugh together. I love Rachel, don't get me wrong. Our friendship timeline is a long one to just suddenly decimate, but I can't help the elephant in our relationship.
But like always, I overlook it.
"So, how was your first day? I forgot to ask Hannah, you know how she gets when she finds a subject she can talk about for hours." I asked to quickly put her mind back upon herself. I seem to find myself uneasy whenever we are on the phone together.
"Ugh, horrible. People always think they can talk to me rudely and touch me, and somebody said something abusive about cats. This worlds terrible!" She yells making me cringe. "Sure, uh, who does that person think they are? Do me a favor and kill them girl." I laughed with her.
"Okay." She says all happily. "Well my mom is yelling, I better go before she turns green and yells, hulk smash." Her mood swings are hard to keep up with sometimes. One time she slapped a friend of ours, and the next she was petting his face while apologizing.
Better yet, our friend did nothing wrong!
"Bye Rachel." I whisper into the phone, knowing I am not going to get anything back before she hangs up. The phone clicked off as I pulled into parking spot 230 in the lot behind our school. I jump out of my truck and grab my bag from the backseat.
As I walk into school, the bell rings and everybody rushes to shut their lockers. I get to mine only to find a basketball drawn on it with hair, boobs, and nerdy glasses. I look over to see a few guys from the team laughing.
I slammed my hand against my locker for dramatic effect, causing them to jump. My hands curl into fists as I feel my knuckles crack. I shorten the distance between us and cross my arms over my chest for a stronger stance.
"You think that is really funny?" I say to one of them. One of them shrugs and looks at the other as smirks curl across their lips. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted Travis, Ky, and their other friend, Matt.
Travis looked between me and the other boys and began to take a threatening step forward, but he got cut short by Ky. I felt a wave of confidence wash over me. This is my chance to prove myself and to show that I can stand up for myself.
"Oh really, that's super funny, because if I remember correctly, I was the nerd beating your sorry asses at basketball." I raised an eyebrow at them with an accusing finger, and their laughing died as their arms fell to the side of their bodies. They froze in place as one of them cleared his throat in being uncomfortable under my deathly stare.
Trust me, I mastered this stare in middle school.
He went to open his mouth, but I held up a hand. It's not worth getting into a yelling-fest over and possibly suspension. "Walk away." I warned them as I crossed my arms back over my chest, and my shoulders defined the muscles in my arms.
Both the boys step aside and walked away behind me. "As if you would have done anything, anyways." The taller one snarls with annoyance on his tongue, yet he is the one that's stayed quiet till now.
"As if I would waste my time on you two idiots." I toss back a blow and by the way they both hunch their shoulders, I can tell I have hit them in a squishy spot. I can't help the smile I flash back at my team as the two scums walk away.
Although, their acceptance of my threatening self wasn't what surprised me, it was that Ky was smiling back.
