We continued on in silence for a long time. The forest around us was changing; before it was dark, and filled with tall, looming trees that shaded out all sunlight. Now we were entering something more pretty. There were small white flowers covering the forest floor, and rays of light filtered down from above.
"Where are we even going?" I asked curiously, to no one in particular.
"Out of this goddamn forest." Growled Mekhi.
"Why? It's so pretty." I stated, my eyes flicking around the pretty world around, lingering on the pretty and colourful flowers littering the soft forest floor.
"Pretty?" Mekhi scoffed. "Even if it was pretty as you say it's deadly. There are so many creatures and plants in this forest that we know little of which could kill you or worse if you touched it. For example those 'pretty' vines in those tree with the 'pretty' little yellow flowers? If you slept there you would wake up being suffocated by them as they wrap around you and squeeze out your last breath and crush your lungs and heart. I'm not joking, I've found a man long dead, wrapped up like a cacoon with all his ribs broken and his lungs and neck crushed by the strong vines."
My eyes were wide and afraid as I dodged past one of those vines hanging off a branch above me, glancing back to check that it wasn't creeping after me. Mekhi continued on.
"There is beautiful bright red berry in this forest that looks like cherries, but they have a poison which makes a person hullacinate their worst fears for hours or days and most end up dying of heart attack. There's a needle edged reed found in forest bogs which inject a venom into your bloodstream meant to instantly paralyse in order for it to consume you, a creature which can camouflage against anything and has no qualms for onama flesh, a-"
"Jeez Mekhi, stop tryna scare the poor kid shitless." Interrupted Archer.
"What? I'm just giving him a sense of reality."
Ash sighed. "I know it's true Mekhi but you're making it sound a lot worse than it is."
Mekhi scowled. "The truth hurts sometimes, you know."
Ash burst out into a bitter laugh, surprising me and making Archers eyebrows shoot up. "I don't think you even know that, Mekhi." The normally overly kind boy scoffed.
What the? What happened to gentle, soft Ash?
Mekhi scowled at him, obviously Ash's comment meant a lot more than I thought. Ash's gaze suddenly softened a bit, but he didn't apologize as he gave Mekhi one last glance and jogged to catch up with Archer. The two began conversing in low voices so I couldn't hear them. I looked at Mekhi, who was glaring at the ground and muttering under his breath.
I glanced around the forest, carefully eyeing the yellow flowered vines and searching for any subtle movements which might suggest a camouflaged creature lurking nearby. I shuddered at the thought.
I wondered what Ash meant by what he said. He basically said that Mekhi didn't understand that the truth hurts. What truth? What's going on between those too... 'Don't flirt with me Mekhi, you know I'm straight.' Ash's previous words popped into my head. Is the truth the fact that Ash is straight? I guess that would make sense, Mekhi does seem to like Ash a lot. Or maybe it's something else, something deeper... gosh I don't know, and why should I care? This is so pointless. I glanced back at Mekhi who was still mumbling to the ground. Might as well strike up a conversation, though I hope it doesn't end the same as the last one, I thought.
"Hey Mekhi..." I began. He glanced up with frosty eyes. "Where are we going?"
"I said before. Out of here."
"And to where exactly?"
"A town."
"What's it called?" I knew the answer wouldn't mean anything to me but I thought i may as well ask anyway.
"Chaapa."
"Oh. Interesting."
Mekhi grunted in response.
I racked my brain for another question. "What were you guys doing on Earth?"
"Looking for something." He tilted his head to the side. "Or someone I guess."
"What? I mean, who?"
"Someone who was gonna help us answer some questions." Mekhi was starting to sound a little irritated.
I couldn't help but ask, I was way to curious. "What questions?"
"Jeez, how many questions have you got?" The irratated edge to his voice had grown. "How about I ask you something. Have you ever had a boyfriend?"
My head snapped up to look at him with a bewildered expression. His question had completely thrown me off track. He met my gaze with a mixture of curiousity, irratation and boredom.
"Ahh... yeah."
"Really? Thank goodness. Talk about him then." He sounded pleased.
"Uh, why?" I didn't feel like talking about Kyle, especially since our breakup was still fresh on my mind and I now knew he couldn't remember me.
"Because I hate questions and if you have something to talk about then you won't ask any. Simple."
"Oh. Okay then. Well he's got dark hair and green eyes... oh his name is Kyle... ummm he's pretty nice and all I guess but a bit of a bad boy and a bit of a player I guess..."
"So you like that kinda guy." Mekhi interrupted.
"What do you mean?"
"The sexy, hot, mysterious, bad boy type."
I shrugged nervously. "I-i guess so...?"
"You like it rough then?"
I choked on my own spit. "What? Jeez, shut up!"
Mekhi chuckled. "Sorry. It just slipped out. Go on, keep talking about this Kyle. I assume you guys aren't together anymore?"
"No... he uh... kinda dumped me the other day..."
"What other day?"
"Like a couple of hours before I bumped into you."
"You're kidding."
"Nope."
Mekhi sounded surprised. "Why'd he dump you?"
I flinched. "I dunno. Well... I kinda do know I guess... but I'm not sure. It could be cos i didn't really... give him... what... he wanted." I struggled to squeeze that out.
"Like what?"
