CHRISTMAS EVE! So hyped :)

"Go away! Leave me!" A furious bark could be heard from behind the concerned soldiers. Colm pushed through them to stand before us, his broken wrist hanging loose by his side. Sweat beaded from his forehead and his arm twitched; he was ignoring the pain. "What do you expect to do now?"

"Fight." Ash growled, his tear stained cheeks seeming to betray his rare shine of aggression.

Colm sighed, turning to one of his men. "Call in reinforcements."

A thrill of fear ran through me. We were too weak to face any more. Saga and Archer injured, Wolf dead, Ash and I inexperienced. We had next to no hope against more men, and hope was our only ally.

Ash whispered next to me, "keep them busy somehow, I'll heal Archer and Saga." He didn't wait for a response as he turned to Archer, placing a hand on his abdomen and allowing the light to encircle the immortal. Swallowing down the sour taste that was rising to my mouth, I faced the enemy with heavy eyes.

Colm's pained face morphed to a grin. He opened his mouth to speak.

"Colm..." a voice behind me: Saga. "Stop this."

Colm scowled again. "Why should I?"

"I know I have sworn that I have no side, that I will not fight for anyone..." Saga began. I stepped aside to allow them to see each other, and so I could study the immortal's weary eyes. "But this is different. These are my friend, my brother... and my lover. And I cannot stand by and see them struggle so pointlessly anymore. And..." he glanced at the lifeless body near him, "this death was caused partly due to me. I should have..." he closed his eyes for a moment, "anyway. I must pay for my mistakes."

Colm chuckled. "You think you can fight back, Saga? Have you forgotten the poison seeping through your veins?"

Saga slowly shook his head as he stood. Ash left the strengthened Archer to assist Saga, the blue chorren healing him now. "I am stronger than most immortals you know, Colm."

"What, because of you mixed breed?" Colm spat. "I know that. You are a whole bag of goodies, aren't you? Something like aberidus, seer, jade... am I correct?"

Saga brought his chin down once. "You forget one."

Colm shrugged. "It doesn't matter. I know you're not pure anything. This poison accounts for that. It is strong; too strong for the pure aberidus; but perfect for you."

Saga sighed. "It does more than limit healing, am I correct?"

"Of course. If that was the case there would be no change to you chorren capabilities. It weakens your whole body; makes you less than any breed; even the mortal ones."

"You are still missing one breed, you know." Saga sighed again. He was almost teasing Colm now.

"Bull shit." The king scoffed. "Even if I was, I've already listed the most powerful three, so it doesn't change anything."

"Are you sure?" Saga questioned, eyeing Colm mysteriously, almost coy.

"Yes!"

"There's one more. One more immortal breed that is more powerful than the three you have listed."

Colm's eyes narrowed. "There is none."

"Even you share the same blood."

Colm released a breath. "So you have a bit of Aridian in you? That changes nothing."

"You don't understand..." Saga's voice fell away as the doors to the room smashed open again, revealing a horde of armoured soldiers, weapons already grasped in iron clad hands. They poured in like water, or lava maybe, dangerous and threatening.

"Call them off!" Saga rose his voice. "I don't want to have to harm anyone! It is not my place."

"Stop making empty threats, Saga!" Colm growled back. "It will not get you anywhere."

"I can assure you they are not empty." Saga's eyes flashed dangerously, the brown appearing almost red as he stared the king down. Ash moved away from him now, and Saga straightened his back, knitting his brow, his serious nature remaining longer then ever. "I have more aridian blood than you, King. More than anyone alive."

Colm did not speak. Did not move at all. I've never seen the phrase 'frozen like a deer caught in headlights' so vividly.

"My mother," Saga began, and my heart pounded harder then I thought could be possible, "was the last remaining of her kind. My father was a mix of three of the most powerful immortal breeds." He allowed his voice to carry through the room, frightening all who could hear him. "My arrogance is not misplaced."

"The last remaining Aridian?" Archer muttered, gazing up at Saga with shining eyes, like a child watching a sports star. "That was centuries... no, millennia ago!"

"Just over a millennium." Saga corrected him, though his eyes never left his threat.

Colm swallowed slowly, glancing to both sides, shifting his weight. He swallowed twice more, licking his lips, and drew in a slow breath. "You have been weakened." He stated, though he was not looking at Saga anymore. He was telling himself, not Saga.

Saga chuckled. "Yes, I have, but I have regained my strength now." He smiled up at Colm. "Colm's men?" He called, but they were already looking at him in fear. A light wrapped around the immortal as he stepped forward, in front of all of us. "Kneel." He ordered, and his light filled the room like a roaring fire. They men trembled, shook, resisted his chorren with all their might; but it wasn't enough. They fell to their knees as if someone was pushing them down, the clang of their armoured legs on the ground invading my mind. Mekhi slipped away and behind us, silently.

Colm was trying to reign in his panic. It was obvious. He was the only one allowed to remain standing, and he was shivering like a leaf. He clenched his shaking hands into tight balls, the knuckles turning white, then hissed and gripped his broken wrist again. The sweat on his face rolled down his paled skin. His eyes blinked furiously, and with his right hand he wiped the salty liquid from his eyelids.

Suddenly his eyes locked with mine. He froze again.

He shut his amber eyes, taking one long and drawn out breath into his lungs. He released the breath, releasing his muscles, relaxing his shoulders. His body stilled it's shivering.

With one breath, he calmed the storm of his panic.

Oooohhhh.....
