PLEASE READ!
With this update, I have published the first chapter of the 'new version' of Maybe, called Blood Inheritance! Please go check it out and add it to your reading list/library :) If you liked this one, you should like that too! Trust me, it's not gonna be a repeat of this, as you'd be able to see from the blurb and the first chapter! It's completely unique and fresh!
Also, I have realised that I will probably have 54 chapters for Maybe (which is much more than I predicted before) - I have made a proper plan now for each chapter, but they may be longer or shorter than I expected, so who knows...
Okay, now you can read this chapter. Please enjoy :)
Nothing happened.
"Kay!" A powerfully frustrated voice entered my thoughts. "What are you doing?"
I opened my eyes.
A dark figure - Mekhi - stood in front of me, his sword against Colm's. "I can't let you hurt them anymore!" He gasped.
"What are you saying?" Colm's voice was a threatening growl, his eyes flashed venomously.
Their blades slid together, both grimacing from the force. "It's been two years Colm! Did you really think," the swords slipped but found each other again without a moment's delay, "that I wouldn't build any emotional ties?"
Colm scowled at his soldier, his skin flushed from exertion. "No. I only thought that your ties to me would be stronger!"
"Ash is like a brother to me!" Mekhi snapped.
Ash's blue eyes widened, as he stood, still near the throne, with hands gripping hands, shaking desperately.
Colm scoffed. "Brother?" His eyes tore at Mekhi viciously. "Brother?"
Mekhi narrowed his eyes at the King, droplets of sweat forming on his forehead.
"King Colm," spoke a voice, one of his soldiers, but he silenced them with a glare.
"No. This is my fight. Stay back, await further orders." Colm's amber eyes met Mekhi's once more. "He's like a brother, is he?"
"Yes, Colm, he is."
Colm prickled with annoyance. He leaned into Mekhi, daring to get closer to their frozen blades. "Have you forgotten something, Mekhi?"
Mekhi leaned forward too; their heads almost touching. "I wish." He snarled.
Colm screamed; it was almost blood curdling. He smashed his blade against Mekhi's, the metallic clang echoing throughout the room. They burst into a violent fight, unforgiving and physical. Neither used any chorren.
Blow after blow was given with no relent. Soldier against King.
"Colm!" Shouted one of his men.
"I said stay back!" He snapped, even as he was being pushed back against the wall. With every step he took back, Mekhi's blows got stronger, more powerful.
Until finally, Colm was cornered by Mekhi, his back against the wall, his only protection his blade, against Mekhi's furious, clean weapon. One last swing brought Colm's sword to the ground, and Mekhi's to Colm's throat.
Colm chuckled crazily. "Go on then, kill me! I dare you, I fucking dare you Mekhi!" Mekhi growled, pressing the blade against Colm's neck, slicing the skin and allowing the blood to fall. But he didn't commit the fatal action.
Colm grinned. "You really think... that you, Mekhi, are strong enough... to kill your brother?" He leaned in so close. "One of your own blood?"
A single tear fell down Mekhi's face. Colm gripped his wrist, bringing the attacking arm down to it's side. Mekhi stared at the ground. My heart pounded like a drum. Brothers? Now it was said, I could see the similarities. Their nose, their jaw. It was almost obvious.
Colm turned back to us. "Now you know the secret... meet my brother, the Crowned Prince, Mekhi," he called to us, victorious. "Many think I murdered him. But..." He glanced back at his solemn brother. "How could one kill their own brother?"
Brothers by blood.
Colm twisted the ring at his finger again.
'The Aridian. They had the ability to instil their magic into certain objects'.
"Ash..." Colm called. Ash looked up in fear.
'You're part Aridian, like me.'
"Don't forget the deal. Weaken Isaak for me, will you?"
'Only those with their blood were able to activate the chorren in those objects'.
Ash looked back to me, jaw clenched tight, hands balled into fists.
'One of your own blood'.
Those blue eyes which watched me warily, glanced to my side. To Archer, and Willow. Ignoring Colm's orders, he fell to their side, and brushed Willow's hair aside.
"Ash!" Snapped Colm.
I need to talk to Mekhi.. somehow... if he loves Ash this much, he would do this...
"Mekhi!" I yelled to him. His eyes, dark in both colour and soul, gazed up to mine. I ignored Colm's curious gaze, and shook my weapon at the ex-bodyguard. "Fight me, Prince."
Mekhi didn't make a single move. He was powerless now. Colm chuckled again. He stood over his brother, and spoke in his ear. Colm's men obediently waited their king's next command.
"Isaak," a voice whispered from my side, "come here."
My eyes sought Saga, and I ran to meet him. He was sitting up again, still weak and worn, but alive, at least. "I would help you now, if only I had the strength," he murmured to me, "but for now, you only have yourself. You must free Ash from his bond; I'm sure you know now what has caused it. The bond of that ring is strange; it can be broken by the owner declaring the deal complete, or by the ring being broken or losing it's owner. Also, if one breaks their side of the deal, it is no longer binding... but it is not easy..." Saga took a shaky breath, his eyes floating over my shoulder. "Watch your back Isaak. You are the greatest threat now."
Quickly, I stood and turned, hearing Ash's shaking voice as he told Archer that Willow was too far gone to save. I gulped back the lump in my throat, not allowing my eyes to water. I heard Saga, behind me, crawl and stumble to them. He spoke in a low voice, one I could not hear or understand.
"Ash!" Colm ordered. "Get away from them. Now."
Ash did as he was told, scowling at the proud King. This moment, now, was a strange calm. The calm before the storm.
Oooop that's the end of chapter forty fiiiivveee!!
