Chapter Twenty One: Just Missed
-Riley-

Last night was rough, I was antsy the whole time I had to watch Patty and all I could think about was going to the park.

But at the end of the day I knew Patty would (unknowingly) snitch me out and I'd have to hear it from mom about how she trusted me and more than likely be grounded from going to the park altogether...so in the end I stayed in, made us a pizza and watched a few cartoons before I laid my sister down.

"Thanks again for taking care of your sister last night." My mom said as she sat down for lunch. "I promise in the future if I pick up any more shifts at the restaurant and your grandparents aren't here I'll get a sitter."

I shook my head knowing we didn't exactly have the disposable income for babysitters, "don't worry about it mom, Patty was good and she went down without even fussing so no biggie."

We caught up a little, she asked me about school and mentioned she wished I'd try and join a team.

"I don't know mom, maybe...but how's life working at one of the towns finest eateries?" I asked changing the subject.

She smiled and teased me with a horrible French accent, "Ze Gougère is only ze finest establishment...only ze rich can afford to dine." She laughed, "no, it's fine...the staff is really nice and the customers tip very well plus they're pretty good about staffing so everyone's good on hours, the options for overtime are also a big bonus as well."

"I'm glad you like mom." I smiled.

"Hey how about I get you and your sister dinner from there...you'll have to pick it up and all but at least it beats the options of frozen chicken sandwiches or leftover casserole."

I nodded, and thanked her before I took off upstairs.

I had a shower and got into fresh clothes while I had the chance and once done I pulled out my phone, a had a couple missed calls from my dad but no calls or texts from my friends back home.

I pulled up my social media account and saw all of my friends going on with their lives as if nothing happened, as if I was never even there.

With a feeling of jealousy I turned off my phone and went to find my sister playing with her toys.

A few hours later my mom walked into the living room where Patty was coloring and I was watching Netflix.

"Ry I'm fixing to get ready to take off...I'll be home around 3am but come by for your dinner around 8, it should be ready then."

I nodded and watched her grabbed her purse.

"I love you both...Patty listen to your brother."

"Yes mommy." My sister said before we waved her off and continued about our boring business.

As time went on an hour had passed and I got patty's shoes on before I licked up the house and put her into my truck. We drove over to Le Gougère, the restaurant mom works at. Once there I held Patty's hand and even held the door open for a very excited woman.

"We're meeting someone." The woman said to the Man behind the podium.

"Name?"

"Sayer...it'll be a party of Five."

The man nodded, "the rest of your party is already seated." He said as another staff member walked over and escorted the Woman and Man to their table.

"How may I help you?" The same host guy asked.

"Oh yeah, our mother works here... Betha Grantson, I'm picking up some food."
