Abby's POV

It's been a week since Maxi kissed me, and I don't have the guts to ask where he is. Surprise, because he hasn't been working for a week and hasn't even faced me... quite embarrassing actually. 

"Yo, Abs!"

I turn to see Harries jog towards me, I'm on the back of the rhino looking over the hood to the surfers out on the waves, south end. 

"Harries." I smile.

"Guess whose come back from their sick days?"

"Dr. Woods?" I raise a brow. Yeah, Dr. Woods is a new friend of ours whose recently left for sick leave, he's usually rock climbing by the Icebergs on the beach. 

"Maxi! Jeez, mate." He crosses his arms.

I frown. "He was sick...?" 

"Oh..well, I don't know much, Hoppo's in charge of those things but yeah, word says he was sick." He shrugs. "He's coming to join you."

I huff. "Why is that? I thought I was with you..?"

He chuckles. "What's with you, Abs?" 

"Nothing!.. Nothing."

"Right, like I believe that.. see you later!"

Harries goes back to his rhino parked on the other side of the beach and I sigh, leaning on the hood of the rhino, Maxi x Me? That's going to be a hard one to ignore, after kissing me he wasn't interested in seeing me or anything.. sick day? Give me a fucking break!

"Abby."

I jump and tilt my head a bit so I see him, but quickly look back at the water in front of me, the surfers are easier to look at without emotion clouding me. 

"Hi, Maxi." I say.

He gets into the rhino and bumps the roof, I look down with a raised brow.. "Can we please talk, Abby?"

I sigh and don't reply, guys like him just are too out of my league, why hadn't  I noticed it in the start? I made him think hanging out with me and texting in the night meant I wanted a relationship... maybe I shouldn't have pushed that thought on him, did I?

"Look.. that kiss was sprung on you when we've only met each other a month ago, and I'm so sorry. I don't want to lose the friendship we have though." He speaks again.

My jaw drops and I bang the roof, climb down and glare at him. "Pardon me?"

"... You're mad."

I lean on the rhino and fake a smile. "Oh, am I?!"

He sighs. "Okay, what have I done, Abby?"

I shake my head at him. "I'm going up to the tower to talk to Hoppo, I can't do this!" I throw my arms out and begin to turn. 

"Abby?... ABBY!"

I ignore his shouts and quicken my jog, when I get to the tower, Hoppo is just about to leave to go to his office. I stop him with a wave.

"Abs, hey." He smiles.

"I would rather like to work with Harries, just today? I've not gotten to be on duty with him much and it's a nice change." I say.

"You're with Maxi." 

"Oh, I know! But... I'm always with Maxi..?" I wince. "What about a change?"

He sighs. "Tomorrow I'll put you up with Harries, alright? But today you'll have to be with Maxi, I'm sure it's alright. You're both good friends." He winks and walks off. "See you tomorrow, Abs!"

"Yeah... right." I mutter and turn around for the walk back to the south end, which turned into a jog. 

When I arrive to the rhino Maxi's just gotten back from a rescue and is shaking off his hair from the drops of water, almost worth losing breath over... He notices I'm back and shyly smiles at me but is also confused. 

"Abs-"

"Let's just do today's shift and get this over with." I sit down and cross my arms.

He sighs. "What's wrong...?" 

"You, you are what's wrong." I shoot back. 

He frowns. "What did I do that made you this mad?" 

"You are a asshole, damn right asshole." I mumble.

"Abby."

"You really thought that kiss meant absolutely nothing to me?" I say, but don't look at him. This is a job that has to be taken seriously, my eyes are on the water. 

"Yes." 

I almost whimper but shake it off. "Why do you think that..?" I whisper.

"Because Abby.." He chuckles. "You're the most gorgeous, kind and the most smartest woman I've ever met, and I couldn't help but think that you wanted someone much better than whatever I am. You deserve the world, Abby.. and I can't give that to you."

"I never wanted the world.." I peek a look at him. 

He smiles. "Then what do you want..?" 

I shrug. "Maybe just you, being yourself... but what do I know? You made the decision for me." I get out of the rhino and take off my shirt, take the board and race for a rescue that suddenly came up.
